Ryan Taylor has revealed that he was released from Newcastle United by telephone before being told to pass his mobile to Jonas Gutierrez so he could be delivered the same news.

The pair are currently in Northern Ireland gaining coaching qualifications and were in Belfast when the call came through from head coach John Carver.

Taylor explained: 'John Carver rang me and told me the club weren't going to offer me a new deal.

'He was made to do it, he obviously was upset in doing it. I spoke to him and he seemed upset about telling two good pros who have been there a long time that it's come to an end.

'I can't really blame John because he's under instructions on what to do.' Cancer survivor Gutierrez scored the goal which sealed Newcastle's Premier League survival on the final day of the season.

However, the 31-year-old has openly criticised the club's treatment of him during his illness and says he deserved to be let go in a more dignified manner.

Gutierrez signed for the St James' Park club in 2008 from Mallorca and did not expect to get a new deal

'I didn't expect to get offered a new contract but it's not about that, you have to move on,' he told Sky Sports News.

'The more important thing is that they can pick up a phone and call me or call my agent and say, 'Listen, thank you for everything, we are going to release you'. That is more the way to do it.'

Both players deserve far more respect than they've been shown here, especially Gutierrez after everything he's been through. Shocking professionalism from the higher-ups at NUFC.

A couple of well paid blokes having to leave the gravy train at the end of their contract. Another will be along soon but just with less pay maybe. I think they will both survive.

    Completely agree.
Our club literally kissed Nile Rangers arse on multiple occasions as he committed crimes and kept getting arrested... yet that same club shows not even the basic level of respect to two long serving and well liked players in Jonas and Raylor.

Bad form. A youth product and a player who battled off cancer to return. No way to treat people

I never understood that mate, it's not like Ranger ever even showed any talent on the pitch to suggest he might be worth sticking with. Isn't he at Swindon now? Us Sunderland fans seem to have more respect for Jonas than the staff at your club do, which says it all.

Horrible actions by hat is turning into a horrible club. No reflection on the fans at all as most of us have very much supported these two through their ailments but it does leave a bitter taste in the mouth. There's a right way and a wrong way of going about things.

Oh and funky its Ryan Taylor not Steven Taylor so not our youth product. A good number of years service from the two players though (7 years Guti and 6.5 years Ryan Taylor?) and they've always given their all - this season we had the City away game in the cup to thank Taylor for and I'm not sure I can recall anything Gutierrez did for us... ?

That must have been a real kick in the bollock for Gutierrez <doh>

One of the saddest aspects is how true Geordie, John Carver, will be booted out of Newcastle. Will he ever be given another job in football ....... even though he's the best coach in the country. It's shocking how the Toon army turned on one of their own.

So much so they're now sucking up to a French bloke with a face like a teddy bear.
Never mind, at least those berets won't be wasted, unlike all those Spiderman masks they bought <laugh>

If it had been the other Taylor, he will be sacked by post.

Don't see what the problem is. They were away from the club on a training course ( and there is no information about how long that is running for ) and I assume their contracts run out on 30 June and I guess they are entitled to a minimum notice. What do you expect, that the club would fly a representative out to Ireland to break the news, that they were clearly expecting, in a more gentle manner. It's a bit off that they asked Raylor to hand the phone to Jonas but other than that, that's life.

And do you have access to the calendar of events for the Board? - we've no idea what their internal process is and when the final decision was made so it may not have been possible to officially inform them before they left for their coaching course. Surely, this didn't come as a shock to either of them.

Based on what? One lad came back from cancer, played outstanding and kept his team up. Why wouldn't he think he's done enough to earn a new contract?
