The former Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa defender was among six players released by QPR earlier this week following their relegation from the Premier League. Dunne's former team-mate Rio Ferdinand announced his retirement on Saturday after leaving Loftus Road and it is understood the centre-back has also decided to hang up his boots. The 35-year-old was shown the door on Wednesday, but had already decided to pass up other offers to continue playing, in favour of spending more time with his family; wife Helen and children Lila and Tayo . Dunne was linked with a move to India, USA and a return to Ireland, but has called an end to a professional playing career that began when he signed his first contract at Everton. The Dubliner made more than 600 club appearances after making his debut for the Toffees as a teenager back in 1997.
Back on topic many thanks Richard Dunne. A good egg in the camp who played for the shirt Happy retirement!
Happy retirement Richard, I wish you well - he really put in some mighty shifts for us and when lacking it was not due to commitment, rather his age catching up with him. In some respects, his much maligned own goal record was likely due to him putting his body on the line in defensive duties, whilst others shirked that responsibility.
All the best Richard thanks. A great professional who always gave his all. There were some truly awful performances during his time here but there were probably more good ones, especially the play off final.
No probably about it Col. The wheels started to come off in the second half of last season, play-off final excepted. It has to be said though that our defence was weaker this season when he was not in the team, which of course is a damning indictment of Harry (and Caulker).
The goal scorer is always remembered more but were it not for Dunne's man mountain performance against a better side with superior numbers, there would never have been 'OBZ Day'. Wishing him a happy, healthy and long retirement.
All the best for Dunne - he's picked the right time to call it quits, imagine he'll em up coaching/management somewhere
Thanks for your effort Dunnie and all the best in your retirement...................... wish I could retire.
