Armin Veh emerges as surprise contender to replace Dick Advocaat at Sunderland
    • Former Stuttgart boss Armin Veh in contention for the Sunderland job
    • The 54-year-old has held initial talks after being recommended for the role
    • Sunderland were rebuffed by Derby-bound Paul Clement and David Moyes

Armin Veh has emerged a surprise contender to become Sunderland's next manager.

The 54-year-old German has vast experience of managing in the Bundesliga with the likes of Stuttgart, Wolfsburg, Hamburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.

He has been recommended to the club who are keen to continue the momentum of Dick Advocaat's reign and build for next season. Sunderland have spoken to David Moyes and Paul Clement among others but were rebuffed and have held initial talks with Veh.

Dick Advocaat left the Stadium of Light after keeping Sunderland in the Premier League

The former Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder returned for a second meeting yesterday and is keen to take on the role. He resigned from Stuttgart last November after a poor start to the Bundesliga season.

Owner Ellis Short is prepared to back the new coach with around six new signings as recommended by Advocaat before his departure last week and sporting director Lee Congerton, who also worked at Hamburg, is busy identifying suitable targets.

West Ham United will wait a few more days to see whether they can convince outgoing Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp or Real Sociedad boss David Moyes to become their new manager before moving on to other candidates

Sincerely hope some of the names being bandied about are just a smokescreen. It could end up where legit targets eg McLaren etc then refuse to come if we get rebuffed by others. Who wants to be second, third or fourth choice etc.

Can't ever laugh at SAFC fans commitment from here or abroad. Time for hierarchy to act like ' hierarchy'

What makes McLaren a legit target? Obvious target yes but legit? Just left his job and instantly linked with every vacant Prem Job. Anyone can do that. What happens when a position become vacant is the Bookies put an obvious list of candidates together based on managers out of work or previous links to the club to which the press then report on those candidates. If every story is to be believed as legitimate eg. McLaren, Big Sam, Dyche ect than every journo who reports a story must have access to our shortlist which is highly unlikely. This story is interesting as it's the first story which isn't written around betting odds. You still can't get odds on this fella so where could the story come from I'm thinking? It's left field to say the list, but then Dick was completely left field. The press and Bookies were miles of until they got a solid source and Dicks odds went odds on and everybody else out to 10 or more.

The Cocu situation is great example, dreamed up by a bunch of fans on a message board, they laid bets which shortened the odds, next thing every media outlet on the planet is claiming that Sunderland are considering a move for him. 30 minutes of investigation would have led them to the truth and they could have reported the source it claimed it to be rubbish but they didn't, because they reported purely on the odds. They're transparent as ****.

Where has this story come from if not from a source close to Armin Veh? Congerton has worked the Bundesliga so that adds up. I'd say this fella is more likely to be on the shortlist than Dyche or Big Sam or possibly even McLaren. Don't know **** about him though @Gustavo's Gonads ?

    This is my logic anyway.:p

Never heard of MrVeh but would rather bring someone in who will bring a totally different mind set too the club than the usual list of has been/ nearly men who we are automatically linked with.Dick brought a breath of fresh air too the club and if there is any truth in him having recommended this guy to Ellis then I,'ll go with that.

Track record looks poor, won a title with Stuttgart but at a time when Bayern were weaker and Stuttgart were powerful.

    Seems a ridiculous link.

I can remember a time, not so long back, when we'd have been happy with the 'Milkman of the year' title <ok>

Maybe just didn't word it right Funky, it's just like the transfer windows. I believe last summer we were linked with about 160 players, we signed 5-6. It's all b*llocks imo regarding the managers position. Nobody has a scooby who is coming imo.

Ah get you. I agree. Keeping my eye on Chris Young's Twitter. He's the man with men on the inside. And he hasn't got a clue other than the appointment is not imminent. We're could still taking applicants and forming shortlists.

Nah, he can't take the heat fella, he stepped down from AZ manager to AZ Assistant manager because he couldn't handle the pressure. Doubt he'd have any interest in a managers job anywhere.
