...Does he have a future at the club? I admit i've always thought Jay was a little lacking to become a top class midfielder, however some of his performances in the latter part of the season certainly made me eat my words. Him and Lucas (Surely the most underated midfielder in the prem) Looked a fantastic long term partnership for the club. His attitude, effort and shear will to win stood out as the type of player any club wants in there midfield. But with the arrival of Henderson & Adam, does young Spearing have a future at the club?
He just signed an extension so ya I think so. Also with all of these midfielders do you think we might play a diamond? similar to how we played with our outside backs more like wing backs? Similar to the formation we beat Chelsea with at their place.
Not really. I think his 'good form' at the end of last season is the best we're likely to see from him. Central midfield is such a crucial area and it's not surprise we've been so poor since Alonso and Mascherano left. I think the area needs Lucas OR Spearing, but not both. Lucas is better than Spearing as well. I believe having a player like Adam in the middle, we will begin to dominate teams and keep the ball better. Lucas alone cannot command a midfield and will often go missing when the opposition gets stuck in.
I believe we will play 4-3-3 but I'm unsure about the players. Maybe Lucas, Gerrard and Adam in the centre. Suarez, Downing/Mata(hopefully) and Kuyt. That leaves Aquilani, Meireles, Henderson, Carroll on the bench...
he has a future I believe as a squad player, just wanted to clear that. Also, you have to remember Kenny does want a British identity with this team, he also wants some local lads who will fire into team mates if they aren't giving it their all. With Gerrard and Carra still around they would back Spearing in a heartbeat if he laid into a player not giving his all for the shirt. I think things like this are important and why he will probably be around. Also squad depth which we have not had for a long while.
Yes. The fact he signed a new long-term contract in May confirms to me that Kenny sees him in his long-term plans.
hmm no Carroll to start? I feel he will def be a starter but I agree with having Henderson, Meireles, and aqua on the bench. Nice to know you have two CM/Am players who can come in and immediattely create a missing spark! now about those wingers.......
Yeah was struggling to fit him in! But I prefer Kuyt to play as a striker than on the right wing. He becomes a different player and more effective. We were in great form last season when Carroll was injured and Kuyt was up front - linking well with Suarez and Maxi. This is because of Kuyt's constant movement and we become more fluid. I'm hoping Carroll works hard during pre-season and becomes more mobile. If he can add more movement to his game, then he will become a handful.
I think he will play an integral part in our team in 3-4 years time, right now I think he could benefit from a loan move so he can build on his good form. A side like West Ham would benefit him as big sam is superb with man management and he'll need a player in that role when Scott Parker leaves the club
I believe Jonjo Shelvey is a better prospect. Physically stronger and better technique. If Jonjo can inherit Spearing's composure as well, we could have a gem on our hands.
I very much doubt that Carroll will be on the bench. I don't think Kenny would sanction 335 million for a bench-warmer!
This, I felt sometimes he was so sluggish, almost used to just being up there and ball coming to him. He will need to get that fitness level up, and his movement will need to be better to playin the system Kenny wants. I agree with Kuyt and there in lies a new problem, if Kuyt plays over Carroll, the flop card will be drawn, pressure on Carroll to come good, etc. Same with henderson if he does not start immediattely. I hope Kenny can get a good balance so we can come out of the gates with positive results! Edit: And also shave that awful beard!
I forgot about Shelvey damn our central midfield is a beast, now we just need to improve the wings and we'll be laughing. No excuses this season
To answer the OP Spearing is a squad player that can fill in at DM and CM, we need players like him to cover injuries and he is probably happy to do that job.
No point bothering with two wingers if you intend to leave your target man on the bench. I can only see an old fashioned 4-4-2 working with what we have bought, but the thing with Kenny is he buys intelligent players that can change and move about. So I think our Sunday best team will be 4-4-2, but we will be able to play any formation with the flexibility in our squad.
I think he'll be our 4/5th choice for CM, which we need if we're going to progress up the league. He's decent cover, and we know that if someone does get injured he'll put in his all which is good.
I don't see Liverpool playing with a target man even with Carroll in the side. Just because he's big and can head the ball, doesn't mean we should just be crossing and lumping long balls to him all day long. We'll stick to our fluid pass and move system where players change positions and move into space. I have my concerns about Carroll because I don't think he is mobile enough but hopefully the pre-season will make him fitter. Suarez and Mata aren't your typical wingers, they like to cut inside and get close to the box and then passing to someone as opposed to crossing which suits our style. Downing is a typical winger who will run up and down the wing and then cross. But I believe he has more in his locker and Kenny will make him switch flanks and cut inside more as well as crossing. Crossing to Carroll is just another element to our attack but it shouldn't be our primary method.
