How he doesn't at least get on the bench is beyond me. Surely if Fletch is out he's the man to step up for the last twenty mins.

Watmore up for Barclays U21 POTY award
    Published: 28 May, 2015
    by Oscar Chamberlain

Forward nominated for Barclays U21 Player of the Year award.

Duncan Watmore has been nominated for the Barclays U21 Premier League Player of the Year award.

The dynamic forward has enjoyed an outstanding 2014-15 campaign and his performances on Wearside have not gone unnoticed, with the 21-year-old currently away with England’s U20s at the 2015 Toulon Tournament.

Watmore made 19 appearances in total scoring 11 goals despite missing three months of the campaign with a broken leg, and his comeback was an emphatic one with the forward scoring six goals in his last six games of the season.

The winner will be announced tomorrow at 2pm with Watmore facing competition from Chelsea’s Dominic Solanke, Fulham’s Ange-Freddy Plumain, Southampton’s Ryan Seager, Arsenal’s Daniel Crowley and Liverpool’s Harry Wilson.

The question now is, can we keep him?

He'll be getting lots of "advice" about his improved negotiating position, from friends, family and agent, about aiming for a bigger club!

Will we play him more like. Don't play him we don't keep him simple as that. Play him then why wouldn't he stay. His dad's hints lead me to believe if he becomes part of the first team set up he'll stay put. His dad is patient and level headed and not upset that he hasn't broke through, he doesn't want his going to a top club to rot and he's an Arsenal fan. But he does recognise the time is now so if we hold the lad back anymore you can bet your arse he'll be off.

Totally agree Funky! I expect to see a lot more of him text season, if he's not nicked during the summer. Let's face it, every player has a price! His has just gone up quite a bit!

I'm hoping he'll be named in our full squad in August, and if I was him, or his dad, I'd be pretty pissed off if not, especially after being forced to watch from the bench his so-called first squad teammates scrabbling to score a handful of goals between them all season!

Doubt he'll go this summer, no way, we've got tribunal protection if his contract expires at the end of next season.

Turned on it's head it seems Watmore has had an unbelievable season in the under 21's where he may have been developing exponentially.

Maybe we were right to leave him down there this season and the time comes at the start of next season to introduce him now that he's ready.

I don't believe playing against a standard that's beneath you is good for development, great for making him look good but for development I'm not too sure. Marcus coaches, he'd be good person to ask. But I firmly believe to better yourself beyond your natural development you need to challenge yourself and it simply wasn't a challenge for him. I reckon he'd be better prepared for next season if he'd battered from pillar to post in the championship. He was getting battered pillar to post in conference when he was just 18. He needed more physical opposition this season imo.

No offence to Marcus in the slightest but I reckon the coaches at SAFC are better qualified to make that decision mate and their actions speak volumes.

I'm just not going to give them grief like they were given over Noble and Laing who both turned out to be damp squibs. The academy certainly do need a win though and I hope it's Watmore breaking into the first team this season.

All I know is we have the very best facilities a club can have and in over ten years as Academy manager Ged McNamee has brought the grand total 4 player though to feature in the first team. Hendo, Colback, Waghorn and Leadbitter. Sunderland don't make footballers, they ruin them. Trust them? I'd rather my kid joined Exeter City than Sunderland.

I don't think throwing them on in the premier league when they're not ready is the answer to it though. They need a better method of getting them ready.

Watmore loving his 'surreal' Young Lions experience
    Listen

England defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday.

    England 2-1 Ivory Coast
    Toulon U20 Tournament
    Group B
    Stade Leo Lagrange
    Saturday 30 May 2015

“It’s been a surreal experience for me. It’s a privilege to play for my country and is the biggest thing of all. To make my debut against Morocco but also to get on the score sheet was a fantastic experience,” Watmore told TheFA.com.

“Confidence is a big thing I’m playing the best football of my life and I feel great and couldn’t ask for more. Everyone here with England has treated me so well, the players and the coaches have been terrific and I couldn’t have asked for more. I’ve been fortunate with the teams I’ve played with this year and I’ve done well off the back of it so I’m very happy with that.”

Morocco sit just ahead of England in the Group B standings on goal difference, but ahead of Wednesday’s showdown with Mexico, the midfielder is hoping to help his side go all the way at the tournament.

“The plan is to get to the final of the tournament, hopefully we can win the next two games, keep working hard and if we get to the final that will be awesome,” Watmore added.

“I want to play as much as possible, train well and see what team the manager picks, every one of the lads have been class and have all worked well as a team and we need to keep that going and reach the final.”

I dunno what's going on but there's definitely something wrong at the academy.
    I'm with Brian here like.
I'd rather my boy joined Boro or Hartlepool than Sunderland.
At least they both have a track record of bringing the bairns through.
