As harsh as that sounds and as unwilling livpl fans are to accept it, that's the reality. Rafa WAS a very good manager but the last 5/6 years have taken it out of him.

In recent years a number of clubs have courted van Gaal. Not limited to Liverpool, Spurs and United. He also had offers from Spain and Holland.

However he had something he had to do. Correct his embarrassing failure with Holland first time round.

Im just being factual with the odd jibe thrown in.

Hes really not that good. Despite what you might think.

Even some of you shudder at the thought he might have returned to Liverpool. Says it all MITO.

no it doesn't. you are just angry he's not going to sell you grease monkey or gorilla face for 120 million a piece and you will have to make do with raiding lesser clubs this time round... mind you he could be doing you a favor given how dire di maria is.

Can't wait to see what he does with real madrid's defence and pepe.

For the record, I do think hiring Rafa is a surprise choice for Real. He was world class but has since regressed.

But to call him average and dismiss his achievements is ridiculous. He is still a quality manager.

He's a Real Madrid man Jimmy, worked for them before, knows the club inside out, is native to Spain, has won the Spanish title and the CL before and will no doubt add the defensive quality that they are lacking and that ultimately cost them the title and a place in the CL final.

Well lets look a little deeper.

Flopped at Liverpool after a great start (2006 last trophy)
Failed miserably at Inter (compounded by Jose winning a treble with the same club soon after)
Won a EL title with Chelsea. Nothing inspiring. Nothing to gloat about.
    Achieved very little at Napoli

Hes maybe just above average. If we are being kind. He had the potential to be world class once, over a decade ago... now hes nowhere near.

He couldnt get a job for 2 years at one point. Such was his standing in the game.

Conveniently missing out the fact he won 2 La Liga's with a team that's not Barca or Real.

Won a lot at LFC during his time and helped us become one of the most feared teams across Europe. He only 'flopped' in his last season.

He took on an overaged, expensive Inter side and was tasked with rebuilding the team. I think he was 9 points off 1st but still had 2-3 games in hand.

Won the EL with Chelsea - which was the most he could have done and kept them in the top 4.For a short term appointment, I'd say that's a job well done. And he continued to act professionally and with dignity despite faced with the worst fans in the game.

Agree he has under-achieved at Napoli but still has won silverware.

He's enjoyed relative success in 3 countries. Not a great of the game but still a class act.

As I said, he was hounded out by English media and constantly criticised for his tactics and style. Across the continent, he's still highly regarded because they actually appreciate tactics.

He won two trophies at Liverpool before spending huge amounts of money on dross (odd good one) and had a breakdown live on tv.

I didn't include Valencia as that was ehen he had the promise of being a top manager. It went downhill soon after and spiralled out of control.
