David Moyes has turned down the chance to become the next manager of Sunderland.

The 52-year-old Real Sociedad boss was targeted by the Stadium of Light club as they look to find a replacement for Dick Advocaat who announced he was leaving his role as head coach on Tuesday.

Owner Ellis Short was prepared to offer a lucrative wage package and a healthy transfer kitty that would ensure Sunderland could bring in up to six quality signings, as recommended by Advocaat.

The Real Sociedad boss is a wanted man as West Ham are also keen on speaking to him

After talks took place on Thursday, Moyes decided the challenge was not for him and he has opted to stay in Spain.

The former Manchester United and Everton boss has also been sounded out about the vacant post at West Ham but it is understood it would take a bigger offer to tempt him away from Sociedad where he has settled quickly.

Sunderland also sounded out Real Madrid coach Paul Clement but he believes taking the vacant post at Derby County is a better career move as he steps up for the first time as a manager.

Clement is poised to agree a three year contract worth around £2.7million a year today at Derby where he will succeed Steve McClaren.

Derby are prepared to back Clement in the transfer market in a bid to reach the Premier League after their promotion push fell away last season.

Paul Clement is poised to take the managers job at Derby County and reject Sunderland's advances

McClaren was sacked after revealing he had discussed the Newcastle manager's job prior to their final game against Reading.

In another twist, the former England boss is also being considered by Sunderland as they reassess what targets to pursue.

Sam Allardyce, who left West Ham at the weekend, is prepared to take a break before returning to football while Roberto di Matteo and Slavisa Jokanovic are interested in the job but not top of Sunderland's list at this stage.

It's the transient world of popular opinion.

He was a genius when he had Derby flying and useless when they ran out of steam.

IIRC he was bringing in loan players to shore up the team after injuries or summat.

I'm not convinced he's the right man for us but I'm not convinced he isn't.

I'm sick of people saying that McClaren failed in the Championship like it's some kind great shame or an easy task failed. One of the hardest most competitive leagues in the world and he failed because he just missed out on the play offs. ****ing hell some people need their heads looking at <doh>

****ing hell you're talking a mag is the oracle of all knowledge. A Mag doesn't want someone so he's rubbish. The most bizzare logic I've ever read. All those geordie managers and coaches winning everything in sight with their superior footballing knowledge. Unfortunately fella it doesn't tell me all I need to know. Why doesn't he want him?

The Derby owners claimed he had his head turned by Newcastle and that's why the wheels come off, but the truth is the squad wasn't deep enough. The surge from Watford, Norwich, Ipswich and Brentford wasn't there all season and when the heat got turned up on Derby, they didn't have the squad to deal with it.

The guy isn't Fergie, he's far from it, but he is a very decent coach. Your club should assemble a team that a coach will thrive working with. You currently have a disjointed unit of players that only seem to show respect for a tiny percentile of top managers.

I'll stick my neck on the line and say not one manager would make a success of your current squad, it's my opinion that they'd have turned on DA just like the rest of them, eventually.

I have no idea who'll we end up with. But whoever it is it's going to provoke some questions about just what the **** Congerton actually does. Sometimes it's a mystery to me. I could come up with names like Moyes, Allardyce & McClaren FFS. This guy has nothing else to do all year but research players, managers and coaches.

To be fair sid, the only people who've come up with those names are the media. They've no idea who's on our shortlist.

He hasn't been here two minutes and already brought in a head coach to kept us up who 95% of us wanted to keep on, who helped net us net 70m in prize money and retain our Premier League status a respected influential ally who's was brought to tears by the club who's offering to help us out for free. Give him a chance. He's had 12million to spend and one manager to replace. He needs chance first question him after that. That's fair. Would we have got Dick without Congerton? No way.

    No interest in Moyes whatsoever.

de Boer remains the one that keeps me thinking. Attacking football, used to DOF, good contacts and will give youth a chance.

Sounds like a plan to me like.

Fair do's Bri, but I'm not anti Congerton in that I don't want him to succeed, of course I do. He got DA in, which was fantastic, but was he responsible for the Alvarez deal? That seems to shaft us big time. And why can't we get hold of some centre-halves with pace? He's not been here long, but football moves very quickly these days...

He was but you can't blame him when a player comes in and gets inured. Players get injured. He was no crock before he came. A very good player for our level and if he'd not got injured we could have been hailing the genius of the loan. As for the CBs, he was on a budget, he did a shortlist and Gus wanted to blow the borini budget on a 10m CB who he tried to play as a box to box midfielder. We have a perfectly good centerback with pace with Rodders imo.

Ultimately with less than a 15 million budget for transfers he brought in three fullbacks, two center halves(on loan) A midfielder, a winger(gus' choice but it still took up budget), an attacking midfielder(on loan) and a striker who's goals helped keep us up and who gave us 5 in a row. I don't think that's bad with such an inadequate budget. We had holes all over our squad and he filled them with naff all to spend.

Short is the problem. We need 40 million this season and the same again next season to stand any chance of pulling away from a season on season dogfight. Short needs to help Congerton to help himself.
