The point seems to be that everyone has to support a club for all their life otherwise they aren't a 'true' supporter. How 'support' is defined is left vague. Though then you could ask also why would anyone care what a 'true' supporter is? Most people will follow what they find entertaining, not to make themselves feel superior. And what people find entertaining will vary and even change over their lives in many cases. The club will hardly care about differentiating between support, they'll just take whatever they can get. Of course if helps if you have an owner you can trust, a manager you think capable and players that excite you.
