Neither Suarez or Alonso had a world spotlight on them when they came to us and both those players are passionate about playing above all else so they came to us for football reasons, not the money. I think the only big names who will come to us will be if we are paying them mega bucks and not because they want to come to us for the passion/history whatever, associated with being part of our club.

  3. Suarez certainly did have a world spotlight on him, especially after his handball in the World Cup quarters against Ghana. He wasn't considered world class at that point but he was a very good player that a lot of clubs were interested in, we were the only ones to take the plunge.

Suarez had just put Ghana out of the World Cup by deliberately handballing so the penalty could be missed

I the handball in my post and took it out before posting, also the bite, but I meant world spotlight in terms of clamour to get those players. Put it in context, while we were offering Ajax £12m for Suarez [bid rejected], Chelsea were forking out £50m for Torres <laugh>

It'd have to be top 4. A cup of some description would obviously be good, but top 4 would be the minimum for me.

Would you rather play for a team that has finished in top 4 once in past 5-6 years under a manager who has no track record, or play for a club who guarantee CL football and work with one of the best managers in the history of the game?

It's widely known that Wenger had been in contact with Sanchez for over a year and personally visited him at the WC, where Rodgers spent most of his time working on Lovren and Lallana.

I hope most of you realise with Rodgers we will most likely sign Ings, then someone like Williams and Ward-Prowse. Probably wasting another £60m+ on them, thus fighting for 5th and 6th with Tottenham.
Those signings would be identical to the past summer windows with Rodgers, just turning us more average by the season.
If you look at our squad now, we are par with Tottenham and Southampton and that will always be the case under Rodgers.

  9. So it wasn't just down to the manager then? #makeyourmindup

I'm sure it had a very big part to play.

  11. That's not what you said...

...that clearly implies the reason top players don't join us is because of the manager. Nothing about the club, history, acheivements, etc but just the manager #backtracking

But I did say that Sanchez had the opportunity to play for one of the best managers in the history of the game in Wenger, or play under someone who hadn't achieved anything in his career?

    Did I not say this?

I do enjoy it when you have to be pedantic to try and get one over on me. ;)

  13. Not being pedantic (this time). You said that players don't join us because of Brod.

    Yes I did ...

    So erm ... what's the issue? ....

    #234
  15. No issue, it's just a unprovable argument because it's just your opinion and not factual as you suggested in your post.

You said based on how the managers are perceived now rather than at the time. You then chose to respond when I pointed out the obvious flaw in that thought process :)

I like it that you can highlight text and a reply button shows up for the quote. Very handy.
I have a feeling his job is primarily depends on the availability of other managers this summer.
