Oddy the start of the tale is truncated but the gist is that the laughing man is on the beach in his trunks and flip flops and he gets a call from the restaurant to say someone has ordered a Paella and they need him to bring a 5kg bag of rice...5 mins later he gets a call to say "don't worry..the tide is in"...the implication being the whole beach bar and paella has been washed away...and then he ponders what to do with his 5kg of rice.

Rough translation but it is much funnier than that.

Australia are in Eurovision because it is the 60th Anniversary. If they win, they get to nominate where the contest will be held next year.

Why not have them in it as they are as much part of Europe as Israel, Russia and all those former Soviet bloc countries?

Voting for the totty does not always work – look at last year’s bearded winner...

No, I am not for “Global Vision” as far as the Eurovision is concerned. I think that the only reason we are still in it is because we are one of the ‘big five’ that foot the bill. If the UK entry had to go through the qualifying semi-finals, I could not see us getting any votes – just as we do not in the competition proper these days.

I do actually feel sorry for the folks that represent us as they are on a hiding to nothing now that the voting is so politicised and dominated by acts with gimmicks.

I actually thought that our entry was quite good this year and entered into the spirit of it being an anniversary; and I thought that Bonnie Tyler and Engelbert Humperdinck had decent songs in recent years but were sunk by the Union Flag.

Terry Wogan used to take the p*** with his commentary every year and now Graham Norton has taken over that mantle, so for one Saturday a year we can have three or four hours on the BBC that nobody is taking seriously.

No need for a Referendum. It is just a bit of fun and we can switch channels (or go to the pub) if we do not want to watch...

Commercial sponsorship covers the majority of it. The rest all the participants contribute towards.

Didn't hear the English song this year, heard the Irish song and it was touted as being a good song but didn't even make the finals stage. As you said it's all the block voting nowadays and not so much how good the song is.

I was joking about you being for a Global vision!

The Eurovision is pure popularity in its voting. That's why the English are fooked no matter what they enter <laugh>

Cheers Beefy...hope all good with you mate!

I see the gay marriage bill was passed in Ireland and I am absolutely delighted with that.

Now they can be as miserable as the rest of us...and QM of course although that might be stretching it a little..

When I watched it run at Windsor my thoughts were "jeez, even the genius Stoute will never get a win out of that beast"

Going through one of those frustrating spells at the moment. Seems like every horse I back loses, and when I fancy one but leave it alone it goes and wins. Yesterday morning I saw the 5/2 available on Zarzal and thought him a good thing. Left him alone and he duly obliged under the 7lb penalty as the well backed 7/4 fav. I think Zarzal could be one to follow over his next few runs, seems to keep something for himself and Adam Wedge appears to be after him all the time but off an effective mark of 115 yesterday he was always going to be wining. Let's see what the handicapper does to him, but anything around 120 and I'm sure he'll be winning again.

Welcome back, Dexter. They will have to go some to be as miserable as me. Just down the road from me in Hull they are likely to be quite miserable by 5pm as they look forward to Championship football next season. Steve Bruce 0-20 against Man Utd. After the game the Tigers players are off round to Jake Livermore’s house to help him get rid of the white dust that is all over the place.

Glad to see that Eurovision was won by Sweden. When I last looked they had got half way through the voting and Russia were leading. I had visions of next year’s contest being a mockery as countries boycotted it in protest at Russia’s involvement in Ukraine.

I listen to Graham Norton’s Saturday morning show on BBC Radio 2 and he was doing it from Vienna (as you might expect) yesterday. Somebody that was on his show did tip Sweden on the grounds that the song was okay and the artist had appeal.

It is notable that Sweden have won Eurovision six times (once with some bunch of wannabes who had failed to get on the show the previous year) and they have a national competition every year to select their song, which apparently is a big TV ratings hit there.

We used to have a one-off ‘Song For Europe’ show in the UK but that got ditched a few years ago. Perhaps with the popularity of ‘singing’ competitions on the commercial channels, the BBC should set one up next year and let the public vote on who represents the UK again. Then if the song bombs out it is not Auntie’s fault but everybody that voted.

All well and good but the best song didn't win.....all about the politics! We could have One Direction singing ours and we would still be finishing with single points. Even the Cypriots don't like us anymore!
