Pickles will now sit on the Tory benches in the House of Lords and have a say on his issues the electorate thought he shouldn't have a say on.

The knighthood/honours system has been a disgrace for decades, the Tories are planning to make another of their election losers a Baroness(Esther McVey),so she can fight to push Conservative legislation through the Lords and thus making it a mockery(yet again)

Paisley wasn't knighted because the Tory government at the time of his retirement hated all things Liverpool and Labour, Bob was both.

Fergie made a £50k donation to the Blair/Labour election campaign and got his knighthood, tbf he deserved one anyway based on some others in the game that have been given the honour.

    Sir Trevor Brooking.<laugh>

    No mate.

Paisley wasn't knighted as posthumous Knighthoods are not issued, nothing to do with the Tories (for once), in fact they weren't even in office - Blair was, and it was he who reminded people that it was only an award given to those who are living.

EDIT: sorry just noticed you mentioned at the time of his retirement <doh>

in fairness AT THE TIME then page is right but in 1997 onward tobes is right you can't get a knighthood unless you are alive.

I'm not talking about after his death, Bob died in 1996 so from his retirement until his death there was a chance to knight him not only for services to football but for his time in the army fighting Rommel's Afrika Corps in the desert.

LFC were overlooked on knighthoods apart from John Smith who got knighted for services to business I think.

"Taken on new role as anti corruption tsar" Oh the irony of the tories having an anti corruption tsar but it does explaim why Pickles was chosen to be that tsar.

He is being knighted because it is part of the game of patronage. Being a good boy and doing what you are told gets you Kudos. He gets offered the Knighthood on his way out the door into his new job of overseeing the increase of corruption as "anti corruption tsar"

To be fair to Pickles he isn't the fat bastard politician that's causing the most problems in Liverpool at the moment (arise Uncle Joe). It was Pickles who called in the Welsh Street demolitions and stopped R Joe bulldozing some of our most historic houses (including Ringos birthplace <doh>). Now the Four Streets Regeneration just around the corner has been nominated for a Turner Prize and Joe's looking a right twat (again). Not often I raise a glass to a fat bastard tory but in this case.....I made an exception <ale>

Not saying he deserves a knighthood for ir like......just adding a soupcon of balance to the thread

To many of Liverpool's historic streets and buildings were demolished in the late 60's and early 70's and concrete eyesores put in their place, the Welsh Streets are important and the Boswells won't have to move.

They haven't stopped demolishing them mate.....more homes were earmarked for demolition during the Blair years in Liverpool than were demolished between 1960 1nd 1980 (thanks to Fat **** Prescott's Pathfinder scheme.....another fat **** politician without a clue). It's a mad statistic that. Granted some of them are still standing but only because Prescott was forced to concede that Pathfinder became an absolute monster that caused an infinite amount more **** than it actually solved (and cost around £3 billion to basically board up or knock down hundreds of communities nationwide).

The problem now is Uncle Joe and his minions have a very cosy relationship with certain "friends" around the city (Plus Dane, Peel, LMH and One Vision may be a few but I couldn't possibly confirm that <whistle>). Guess who was getting the contract to "develop" the new Welsh Streets noddy box houses after Joe knocked the nice, big old ones down *cough* Plus Dane *cough*, and guess who'll be favourites to get the contracts to do the Welsh Streets up if Joe doesn't manage to get the bulldozers in *cough* Plus Dane *cough* <laugh> Two Bins Joe can't lose really can he....

    Poor Joe.<laugh>

Bet you were on the picket line outside his gaff in Derby Lane.<whistle>

But yeah its getting like in the 80's when only Fleet and Rogersons were getting all the graft off Degsy.

I was on the picket line yeah...but only because I know that outside Uncle Joe's is the best place in town to situate your burger van <whistle> #bestcustomer

Basically we just never get it right as a city eh and we probably never will <laugh> Tory government through the 80's and early 90's and we elect Labour and Militant councils....Labour government wins under Blair so a traditionally Labour city decides to vote the Lib Dems in.....Lib Dems get into power as part of coalition....but Liverpool manages to then **** them off for Labour again <doh> You really couldn't make that **** up seriously....

Joe knows the Walton Park thing is a no go now anyway. There will be so much fuss about it that it's bound to get called in by the Tories and (rightly) they'll say "no Joe you just can't build this stadium on a public park when there are tons of other sites within a 5 mile radius that could be used". I doubt even Joe thinks this one will be worth it but then he does still think he can get away with building on both Sefton and Newsham Parks so maybe I'm underestimating his idiocy.

Mate they are all just as bad as each other at the end of the day. Even the Libs had "Sir" Diddy Henshaw fiddling at the till if you remember. Jane Kennedy outed that deal in parliament, the one where Henshaw paid Liverpool Direct £2,5 mill for 90 staff computers <doh> What...the....holy.....****.......Liverpool Direct coincidentally was owned and run by Diddy's chief hatchet man Dr David McElhinney....a "doctor" and a knight of the realm....makes you proud doesn't it <laugh> In a strange twist Uncle Joe helped in outing this one....credit too him for that at least.....but I do wonder how he'd have reacted if it had been a Labour Party member instead of a Lib Dem one <whistle>
