I'm not seeing anywhere where he says he'll take the job. I did hear him say we want him and he'll decide after he's been on Holiday for a week.
Can`t find anything either. "The Dutchman, who led the club to safety after replacing Gus Poyet in March, is seeking assurances from chairman Ellis Short over his intentions before committing his future to the Stadium of Light. Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, the former Rangers and Holland manager said: "Mr Short made a commitment when he said he wants the club to be in the top 12 on a regular basis, so that means the club has to invest." Strong hints (depending on Ellis) but nothing definite.
The way I understand it is that Sunderland are the 8th biggest spenders in the EPL. So it kinda amuses me when 'football men' say Ellis will have to spend more. No, Ellis has spent enough and seen it squandered on **** by those who "know something about'football" - let's get it the right way round for a change. I hope Ellis sticks to his guns (Portsmouth is the long-term alternative). If anyone doesn't like it - including Advocaat. who I've already supported to the hilt - then tell them to f*** off. I want a manager, not an extortionist.
Quality players won't come knocking on our door asking to play for us mate. The fact that money has been wasted on substandard players isn't an argument for not spending more. It's an argument for just spending more wisely. As Dick has said, we are short on quality in depth and that needs to be addressed urgently otherwise next season will be no different from this. Portsmouth over-stretched themselves and were caught out. We've rode our luck and got away with it for the last 4 seasons, otherwise it could've been us as well. But that's no excuse to hold back on spending just in case what we buy isn't good enough! It means we have to learn from our mistakes.
We've been saying that for the last eight years. Either somebody puts his foot down here, or they don't.
liking the fact that well known ex-players are interested our club at some point. Shows how much the club gets under the skin
More to the point at the minute is that DA has turned the team into a solid unit that will fight and die for the club and each other. We have players out injured who could come back and fit into the system without great disruption. Whether we play attack or counter attacking football we have come very close to winning the games DA has been charge of. We are leaving this season on the same high as last year and I for one believe we have a good enough squad but, like any other, could stand the recruitment of a couple of more players to drive on from here because we have a manager with a clearer vision than many of the others put together.
I think Nostalgic has hit Advocaat's intentions bang on the nail there. If we have, say, £20m to spend, signing four decent players with it is getting us nowhere that we haven't already been. To improve, we need one £15m player who will make a difference. Put the other £5m to one side and next season, we'll have £20m + £5m saved and gradually we'll build a better quality team than we've had in years. But anybody who thinks we need £50m straight away to chuck away like we have been doing, tell him to close the door as he goes out. We've gone as far as we are going with the 'dig deep', 'splash the cash' idea.
Dick himself says the squad isn't good enough Nostalgic. Might you be looking through rose-tinted glasses on the last 7 or 8 games? What Dick has done is bring a thin squad together and made a team out of it, but all he's done is paper over some big cracks. The squad is desperately short of quality in depth mate, short on pace with plenty of old legs out there that aren't getting any younger! It can't all be fixed at once and there are dangers of bringing too many players in at once, as we well know. But we do need 4-5 quality first-teamers in as well as a few decent squad players in before next season.
It's not a case of starting out with a wad of cash and letting everyone know just how much you've got to spend. But it is a case of our next manager identifying who he wants, Congerton going out and getting them and Short finding the money. Now if that comes to £1, £5, £10 or £50 million, that just isn't the issue. That's just the way it needs to be for the manager to be allowed to deliver the highest level of success with the squad he's pulled together. You gotta speculate to accumulate. You just gotta do it wisely.
Well a few definitely have to go. I don't think we'll get much for them though, maybe a few mill here or there.
John carver and Joe Kinnear are also interested !, but with Carver being (unofficially) the best coach in the premier league, well a top 4 place now a possibility hehe. Where will Alladyce be heading though ? the Real coach is going to WHU I think. could we get Jochim lowe (spelling) the German coach here ? he knows a hell of a lot, and with his influence players like Muller may sign for us.
