Weren't Everton, strictly as a football team, affected worse than any other English club as a result of Heysel? I remember someone telling me this was the case given the ban from European football that came about.

Yes, arguably the worst affected. We won the league twice during the ban period and had won the league and Cup winners cup the season it happened. We were widely seen as being one of the top clubs in Europe and fancied our chances of the European cup in '86. What happened after the ban was that our side and manager eventually all trudged off to test themselves in the European arena. As a club we've never really recovered from it, as we had climbed to the pinnacle of the game domestically but were denied the chance of Europe. It's when the friendly derby started to turn a bit sour, but despite it, we've always stood side by side over Hillsborough. It could have been us or any number of other sides during that period, as that was an accident waiting to happen that place.
Yeah QWOP, it's impossible to say what might have happened but the ban being for English clubs rather than just Liverpool had a massive bearing on Everton. They won the league in 85 and 87 (finished second in 86) and had won the Cup winners Cup in 85 too prior to the ban.
Makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised if maybe (just maybe) one or two Everton fans may have done or said something about Hillsborough however no way would it be a sizeable amount. Many Evertonians were affected by it with family being killed during the tragedy.
