Looking at one of Rafa's starting line ups in the Champions League and it consisted of likes of:

Reina - £6m
Agger, - £6m
Carragher - Free
Aurelio - Free
Arbeloa £2.6m

Mascherano £18m
Alonso £12m
Gerrard Free
Torres £20m

Look at the quality on show and look at how much these players cost. Of course inflation means these fees will now be higher but the point remains.

Comparing to our current team.

Rena - Mignolet - Acceptable, no change this summer.

Agger - Sakho - Improvement - no change needed
Carragher - Skrtel - Acceptable on paper but doesnt balance with Sakho, needs improving.
Aurelio - Moreno - Inferior defensively, equal in attack - Improvement not urgent
Arbeloa - Flanagan - Acceptable but injured for ages - Manquillo and Wisdom - Passable - undecided

Mascerano - Lucas - Lacking - needs improving this summer
Alonso - Henderson - different type of player for a different tactical approach - no urgent need to improve
Gerrard - Coutinho - Different style but very good - No need to improve

Torres - Sturridge - very good Injured a lot (very similar then) - Needs improving

Thats 3 urgent improvements need for me and the new comer has to be of the highest standard.

INTER STAR TO REPLACE XAVI?

Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacicadmits it’s an “honour” to be linked withBarcelona.

The Catalans need a long-term successor for Xavi, and Kovacic has been tipped to replace the veteran.

The Croatia international, who is also a reported target for Liverpool, is flattered that Barca are believed to be keen on him, but admits he is happy at San Siro.

“Barcelona want me? It’s an honour, but I am very comfortable here,” he toldInterChannel.

Meanwhile, Tuttosport claim Barcelona's international sporting director Ariedo Braida recently dined with Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio and used the opportunity to enquire about Kovacic’s availability.

Ausilio also took advantage of the situation to ask about Barca's Pedro and was informed that the Spain winger could leave the Nou Camp for €18m.

There are younger, cheaper players with more ability and potential than Milner. And I stand by 'cheaper' because Milner will command a signing on fee and stupid wages. He's already on £90k a week at City - he's looking for one big pay day ala Joe Cole.

So we continue trying the get players on cheap wages only to miss out when Spurs or Chelsea come swooping in so result in over paying for some Saints one-season-wonder again?

People moan that we don't get deals done when targeting the likes of Henry Ryan, Willian, Salah, Sanchez, etc but if we want to wrap these sort of players up quickly then we need to other wages immediately rather than playing hard ball. We seem to always piss about until nearer the end of the window and then panic and blow our load on the likes of Lovren, Carroll or Balotelli etc.

Rodgers big mistake has been not building a solid spine to the team.

Reina, Carragher, Agger, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Torres.

Courtious, Cahill, Terry, Fabrigas, Matic, Hazard, Costa.

You need a spine to build a team off. Rodgers built around an attack. It was a great attack but our defense was crap. The attack broke and we broke. If we'd ad a spine we'd have been ok.

We need a solid and balance pairing in CB,a solid and balanced pairing or trio in midfield and a reliable striker.

I'm happy to carry on with Mignolet in goal, Sakho as LCB (so we need to find the right RCB), Henderson as b2b CM (A DM and creative midfielder need looking at) and Coutinho as AM. I'm happy with Sturridge but his fitness is to risky to only have him so we need another top striker.

I'd be happy to keep one of Can or Lucas in our starting midfield trio as long as the third midfield spot is filled by a player of the higher standard.

Equally not destroying the old spine quick enough; Agger, Skrtel, Lucas and Gerrard

Eyebrows would be raised, but Cambiasso has proven he can play in a Premier League midfield. Left-footed, he would give a bit of balance to the middle. The last mid-30s player with no hair signed by Liverpool turned out alright, after all.

The forward has started just 14 La Liga games this season and has seen his impact at Camp Nou lessened because of Luis Suarez’s arrival. An offer of more games, and increased responsibility, could suffice.

Petr Cech; quality keeper and better than Migs. Depends on the wages IMO, can't see him joining for less than £100k per week and I don't think we can afford to high paid keepers. I'd chose Cech out of the two but I reckon Brod will stick with Migs.

James Milner; get him signed. Yes, he is better than what we already have but that's not the reason I'd sign him, I'd sign him because he is a quality CM that's been wrongly used as a RM/RW for too long by Man City and England, he was outstanding at CM for Villa and he would fit our style perfectly. Never give up attitude is what we need to install back into the side too.

Improve the first team and the squad will take care of itself. EC won't improve the first team, certainly not to the level we should be aiming for.

I'm not talking about offering a player worth £60k per week £200k so they join If they are worth £60k per and others are showing interest (where we're likely to lose out) then offer them £70k or £80k early and entice them to sign.

We haven't won a major trophy for nearly ten years (debatable on the League Cup so I won't count it), we have no true world stars, a pretty much unknown quantity as manager, no CL football to offer and we're trying to top it off with a structure basic wage system with bonuses. Is there any wonder they're going elsewhere?

LFC have players who are "not too bad" and will do well with the first striker up there.

Agreed, hence me saying right player at the wrong time. although i will add that 'right player' whilst Brod is manager is very loose too IMO, Brod likes players that can play in more than one role, I'm not sure Pedro can do that.

I don't agree on Sanchez, I think he's the sort of player that can play any attacking position. Play him in a front pairing with freedom to roam and he'd be quality IMO
