Sunderland set to hold talks with Dick Advocaat about extending his stay as boss Dick Advocaat could remain in charge of Sunderland next season after admitting for the first time that talks are planned over his future. The Dutch boss met with owner Ellis Short this week and the American billionaire expressed his delight with the recent revival. Sunderland have won three from six since Advocaat’s arrival and are now two points clear of danger ahead of Saturday’s visit of relegation rivals Leicester City. please log in to view this image +4 Dick Advocaat could remain as Sunderland manager next season, with he and the club set to hold talks please log in to view this image +4 Advocaat has guided the Black Cats to three Premier League wins out of six since taking over The 67-year-old has previously refused to talk about extending his stay beyond the end of the campaign, joking in the wake of last weekend’s 2-0 win at Everton that his wife would divorce him were he to sign a longer-term deal. But Advocaat is clearly enjoying his first experience of the Premier League and, with the club hierarchy impressed with his impact, the chances of him being installed on a permanent basis are becoming increasingly likely. When asked if discussions were scheduled over the possibility of staying on as head coach, Advocaat said: ‘I think so, yes. I can’t say much about it, because we’ll have to see what happens in the next 14 days. ‘It’s definitely the case that I enjoy it here. We’re really enjoying what we’re doing. ‘I realise there’s a lot to do with this club, but the main priority is that the club has to stay up and then making sure it has the right set-up for next season, but I have ideas, a lot of ideas.’ Advocaat added: ‘The owner was here on Monday, and he talked about the potential of the club as well. ‘He was very excited about everything. He hopes in the future he can watch Sunderland more in the top half of the table rather than the bottom.’
Closer to home for me as he knows a thing or two about Academy football so at at last we'd have someone who'd kick the coaching haven't been's out & get it working.
I like Advocaat a lot. He's just looked at what we've got, put round pegs in round holes, square pegs in square holes, and said how he wants that to work. It's simple, common sense stuff with a team brought in by somebody else - and that's exactly what will work with a DOF. All for it, me.
The downside is he's getting on for 70 (in 2 years time) and in his own words there is a lot to do. Also most interim managers make an impact. But having said all that i would love him to stay. There is a calmness about him and a wealth of knowledge and i feel our club is in safe hands with him. Staying up is vital though and before he came that didn't look likely so he deserves a crack at next season at least...if we stay up.
wouldn't be upset if it was agreed that he stayed on as coach by any means, maybe he fancies seeing what he can achieve with us having a full pre-season and some cash to splash, we could do an awful lot worse
I still have one or two reservations in the way he has set things up and that he seems reluctant to even put Watmore on the bench..However, if he keeps us up then I will be very grateful and will give him my full support should he be given the job..
Totally agree with this. He came in and consolidated with what he had to work with, we've not exactly got the best squad in the league have we? If he does stay and I hope he does, I think we'll see more of the team he wants to play next season, rather than playing with what he has available. He's a hard task master by all accounts so we should see some discipline in the team as well. No more of this players ruling the roost.
From the moment he came in to right now he has getting the number of points necessary in order to stay up.........or so we thought! If we still go down he can count himself as being really unlucky. So in a way, even if we still go down, he has still done a decent job. I pretty sure we would not have getting the points if we stuck with Gus or would we have getting the points if we replaced him with most other managers who could have been on our shortlist.
I'll back who ever comes in but know enough about Dick to create an informed opinion. All I know is that he prefers variations of 433, he gives youth a chance and his transfer dealings are hit and miss. I'd need to see his ideas which I wouldn't until he got the job.
What I've seen during his interviews he always speaks & analyses the situation level headed, seems unfazed and refreshingly unbiased - he's hugely experienced we could a lot worse IMO -if he wants to stay I'd be quite pleased.
