****'s sake when I lived in Germany we used to go out on the razz and ask the neighbours to keep an ear out for the kids. Not an issue.
That was the 50s ...different era! Do you honestly think what the mccanns did was acceptable i,e. leave 3 kids under the age of 4 alone in a strange apartment with no sight or sound of them and no one keeping an ear out for them!
I genuinely don't see an issue with it. All the people at the Tapas bar (50 yards away) were taking it in turns to check on the kids.
I think it's ****ed up... If I ever have kids, I will never leave my kids alone in a house or hotel or apartment ...
