RE; Homegrown rules...

I was talking to someone in the office yesterday about football and the Cup-Winners-Cup came up for some reason. We were looking at past winners and saw Arsenal won it in 1994, neither of us could remember them doing so. We decided to look at the teams from the final and it made for refreshing reading...

...look at the nationalities in those teams. English and Italian teams with mainly English and Italian players with only two and three non-national players respectively. Anyone else miss this...?

no i didn't

the rule back then were prebosman and we actually saw souness sell staunton in favour of burrows cos he was irish and not one of the 3 allowed foreign players

Oh and thats a boring boring arsenal side without question.

I can distinctly remember thomas brolin and his particular celebration... which was rather silly especially as he got tubbier.

you guys remember the prior years cup final?

arnseal in 1993 won the mini double (league cup and fa cup) and they only won the fa cup after replay.

the celebrations in the legaue cup final saw the arsenal team loft steve morrow up then drop him and break his arm.

I've already told you he aint going anywhere. Gerrard's even saying that FSG should back him big with quality signings and told Sterling he's the best manager for him as he's a great man manager.

You also said we'd be signing Robben <whistle>

Seriously though, I now that is what you've said but nothing is ever certain. If someone comes in and bids £100m we'd sell him. If someone offers a fiver we won't. Somewhere inbetween is a meeting point. Who is to say a club won't offer it?

The Parma front two look exciting though; Zola and Asprilla!

Yes they were certainly up there back in the day. Brolin, zola and aspirlla remember. Brolin was hotter property than the other two!!!

on the other hand this was probably the last of this arsenal team. They were dropping off by then and 1993 followed 1991 when they lost only one game and won league 1-0....

merson was adrunken wreak, smith as past it, campbell was a dog of a player really and ended up at everton no?

they had just signed keown then so wenger's great defence of seaman, keown, adams, dixon, winterburn was actually all in place back then. 1993 and thne in 1998 won the double.

Some interesting names in those line ups, only a little over 20 years ago but feels like a vague memory <confused>

I was trying to guess the line-up. I only got the back five plus Alan Smith <laugh> Expected Parlour and Wright to be in the line-up.

They'd been in place for a few years by the time Rioch and then Wenger took over.

TBF to Wenger though, the invincibles defence didn't include any of them, not even Keown...

that would be fair i suppose yes <laugh>

I did say 1998 not 2004.

cole they made themselves. Lauren was a good buy and so was sagna. bellarin looks another good buy for full back in the same mould.

two dms..

gilberto and vieria would be classed as that i reckon

all about the front 4 and back 7 i suppose <laugh>

Vieira was more B2B from what i remember although I would agree he was stronger defensively.

My point still stands regardless of whether it was one or two though :p

in 2004? he was sitting back more i would say. earlier on he did cover more ground as did keane but there you go.
