Liverpool have identified Southampton captain Jose Fonte as a key target to help bolster their defence.

Fonte was handed the captain's armband replacing Adam Lallana who made his move to Liverpool last summer during Southampton's summer exodus of players.

And according to the Daily Mirror, Brendan Rodgers is now considering a move for the centre-back and securing Fonte's signature would be a massive boost for Rodgers.

While 31-year-old Fonte is contracted at Southampton until 2017, manager Ronald Koeman would be willing to let him leave at the right price.

However, Liverpool may have to battle with Manchester United and Benfica for Fonte's signature as they too are keeping tabs on the situation at St Mary's, the Mirror reports.

Fonte would join Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren and Lallana at Anfield if Liverpool were able to secure a deal for the Portugal international.

I suppose 31 is a reasonable age for a defender and will still fit FSG policy.

I'd prefer to piss them off even more and sign Alderweirald.

We should cross charge other top PL teams as we're doing their scouting for them.

    Please stop bullying me!

But seriously, it's not as simplistic as that. If we were linked to John Stones, Barkley, Ox etc - then I'd be happy. But unfortunately, we're not. British players are simply not good enough and there are very few that I would want to sign. Not only that, they're not value for money. The whole British market - which includes foreign lads - is extremely hyper-inflated. And that's not to say I don't rate players in the PL - again, I would take players like Wanyama, Schneiderlin etc in a heartbeat. But unfortunately, as already mentioned, they would cost an arm and a leg.

If we want to meet the quota for home grown players, then we develop our own. Like we did with Wisdom, Sterling, Ibe - that's the best way of doing. Don't buy British players - develop them.

We've been burnt so many times by buying from this market - Adam, Carroll, Downing, Lovren, Lallana, Enrique, Borini, Allen (to some extent). That is £140m spent on players who simply do not improve us.

Wouldn't take either one of them - both are inconsistent and have poor attitudes apparently.

like ayew.. yes he's courting us big time.

then will join anyone offering him the pound of flesh

    ...............

    I do agree.

    1. we MUST generate as many home grown players as possible. I have always and always will call flanagan average. but now he is a crock had he not been a crock i would be first to say hey... no way should we be buying a montoya here we have wisdom and flanagan and we have to make that work for us as it fills quota

    2. We must retain english talent. Sterling is a case in point. I advokate strongly to sell him now as its going only one way but he should have had a big contract under his nose while SAS were firing us forward. why the **** was this not done... it was stupid in the extreme

    3. we must buy the loverns and markovics of this world for 5mil out of their home leagues not 20million out of enlgand or portugal.. ffs do we not trust our own eyes and have to have other clubs vet them for us?

In short.... to get a gem you have to take risk, thats why I am still waiting to see ilori whos also been a sick note before writing him off. at least there and with teixteria we've tried to go do it right...

Is everyone happy now with Rodgers having another summer transfer window and next season to try and get it right then?? The clamour for his head has died down a bit although I'm sure some still want the axe to fall.

    no...

    I am not happy with

    a) transfer committe idea at all

    b) lack of oversight and technical director where the buck stops with. i don't feel the academy recruitment has been working for at least 2/3 years. i feel we are now back to pre rafa days there and won't been seeing much out of it as it stands

    c) rodgers ability to pick a player

    d) LFc's willingness to actually either go buy out of cheaper leagues where talent is like holland or serbia/coractia or where ever Or to pay the frigging going rate to players.

I'm still on record.. its only going one way...

I've already told you he aint going anywhere. Gerrard's even saying that FSG should back him big with quality signings and told Sterling he's the best manager for him as he's a great man manager.

  18. Can't argue with any of that (<yikes>) but despite those burnt fingers, I don't think we should be ruling out the British market completely, we just need to stop paying ridiculous fees for British based players. If the fee is too high then walk away.

Its quite annoying that we have a reputation for paying over inflated transfer fees but being skint flints when it comes to wages <laugh>

  19. RE; Homegrown rules...

I was talking to someone in the office yesterday about football and the Cup-Winners-Cup came up for some reason. We were looking at past winners and saw Arsenal won it in 1994, neither of us could remember them doing so. We decided to look at the teams from the final and it made for refreshing reading...

    upload_2015-5-15_9-46-35.png

...look at the nationalities in those teams. English and Italian teams with mainly English and Italian players with only two and three non-national players respectively. Anyone else miss this...?

thats grand if quality was bought....

as i said if you do a list of pros and cons about rodgers the pros ahve some important factors in there but the cons are long.

I feel as though the club is not doing itself any favours with the current structure and it must change. end of.

whether that means rodgers is given his exact choices for first team or a technical director picks everyone I don't care but the current set up is failing especially at academy level where we are just not oging to see much coming through.
