Gaston Ramirez to leave Hull City as hamstring injury ends season GASTON Ramirez has played his final game for Hull City after it was confirmed his season has been curtailed by a hamstring injury. The on-loan midfielder has missed City's last two games with a recurrence of the problem that has limited him to just 50 minutes of action in the last seven weeks. Scans have revealed Ramirez has suffered a fresh tear and will now play no further part in City's fight against relegation in the games with Tottenham and Manchester United. The latest set-back over the 24-year-old's fitness ensured there was no place for him in Uruguay's provisional squad for this summer's Copa America tournament and also confirms a flat conclusion to a season-long loan from Southampton. Despite arriving on a deadline day full of promise last summer, Ramirez has been unable to command a regular place in Steve Bruce's side, starting just 11 Premier League games in an injury-hit season. Bruce remains an admirer of Ramirez but the playmaker will not remain at the KC Stadium next season – even if City were able to avoid the drop. Although Southampton are open to offers on Ramirez, who will soon enter the final year of his deal at St Mary's, both his wages and transfer fee make a deal almost impossible for the Tigers. Not only are the Saints looking to recoup a sizeable chunk of the £12m they shelled out to sign Ramirez from Bologna in 2012, his £70,000-a-week salary would not fit within City's existing pay structure. Ramirez's unconvincing time in the Premier League would make that a huge gamble for City or any other English side and his most likely destination this summer will be Italy. Several Serie A clubs, including Inter Milan, are said to be monitoring Ramirez's future ahead of an inevitable exit from Southampton. While Ramirez has not given up hope of recovering in time, current City team-mate Abel Hernandez has been named in Uruguay's squad for the Copa America, which kicks off in host nation Chile on June 11. http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Gast...ring-injury/story-26488052-detail/story.html?
I didn't realize that Southampton had paid 12 million quid for him. A bit lightweight for the Premier League (imo) and has done nothing to justify that sort of money (again, imo). Would do well in the Championship but he will probably go to Italy.
I'd have sent him back earlier, never saw him do anything in the highlights I saw & the matches I caught on the net, I won't even mention that ****ing Newcastle game I went to!
Agreed. Other than a couple of promising performances I was not impressed with him. Not sure why Bruce was as I thought Quinn was much more effective and committed to the team. A waste of a loan space.
Disagree I thought Ramirez was decent and played a lot better than most of our midfield has this year
He only played in his proper position twice and looked excellent both times. Play Michael Dawson as a full back and he'd look **** and out of place. A poor signing because he was obviously brought in willy nilly without an idea of how to use him but he's a good player and its a shame we didn't see more of what he's about.
Agree with you Mr Hat. Didn't start well, but started to fit in from January onwards I thought. Obviously has some talent and creativity and he would have been in my side if fit and available for the last 2 games. Having said that, more or less anyone with two legs could come in and replace our midfield based on the last 2 games. Didn't realise he was only 24 as well- he still has lots of time to pick up the more physical aspects of the game. Cannot believe Southampton paid £12m for him, but the £5m being bandied around at the moment wouldn't be too far off the mark for me.
His control on the ball was excellent, created time and space when he was given the opportunity. Essentially an upgrade on Huddlestone when Huddlestone was played in an advanced role, but having both in the team was a waste of a spot because it meant either shunting Huddlestone back into a role where he was under too much pressure and cost goals, or pushing Ramirez up to a second striker which he blatantly isn't.
I think he's a decent player, it's a shame we didn't get to see more of him, we'd only just found out his best role in time for him to get injured.
He's a very good player but as others have said injuries and playing out of position never really helped his cause.
He looked promising in terms of ability but never achieved anything even when he played well. One very lucky goal and I can't remember any assists. His set pieces should have been a threat but never were.
You don't have to think too far back PLT....interception and through ball assist for N'Doye's second v Palace. Given the absolute lack of creativity and assists from the rest of central midfield, I don't think it would be outlandish to assume Ramirez would have made a positive difference to the team had he been a) consistently fit, and b) Bruce had realised what to do with him before he got him
All these opinions of a number of our players leads me to believe that the big problem was the fact that they rarely (if ever) played consistently together as a team. They couldn't possibly 'bond' under those conditions and consequently couldn't attain a fluency between each other. Look at Elmo and Brady, who have a reputation of being excellent at crossing the ball, put some beautiful crosses in but there is nobody there. They had Jelly one week, Hernandez the next, followed by Sagbo, Aluko and N'Doye. They never got used to a regular strike force. I believe the same applies to midfield where The Hudd and Livermore are more than capable at this level but, when they get the ball, they don't know whether to pass direct or put in a through ball so their option is to put it down the wing. I remember Ian Butler once saying that he didn't have to look up after beating his man and cross the ball because he instinctively knew that Waggy or Chillo would be on the end of it. Archibald and Crooks formed a formidable 'partnership' at Spurs as did Quinn and Phillips at Sunlun (and many others) but we haven't been in a position to field the same two strikers on a consistent basis. Ramirez is one who doesn't appear to have an 'end product' because he doesn't know his forwards well enough - my opinion is that he is a bit lightweight at this level. I was hoping that earlier in the season we would be able to field a regular team of 'first choicers' because I felt that we did have the makings of a formidable side but injuries scuttled that idea. I can't see what else Bruce had to do with what he had and whereas everyone was jumping up and down after a defeat as to what a useless Manager he was, nobody came in with praise when we beat Liverpool or Palace. Very disappointing season for us and we can only dream of 'what might have been if . . .".
