I have a genuine technique which I devised to stop me from smoking back when I was 26, and again when I started again after splitting with my partner, but it does require quite a bit of explanation. PM me if you are interested. It does work and fairly quickly too.

It's a matter of timing. I tried to cut down/give up several times and failed. Then, when I was on 30 a day, I just knew that it was "the time" and nothing was going to stop me. I don't think patches or gum were available back then*, but I would have avoided them anyway because it just seems like feeding the craving and thereby prolonging it.
My initial physical cravings were over quite quickly (a few days-serious; a few weeks-annoying and sporadic). After that, it was more of a mental issue- I was so used to having a ciggie when writing a report, having a cup of tea or a pint. I soon realised that I only really missed a few ***s a day and the rest were habitual. The single hardest thing was to accept that I could NEVER have another cigarette, without risking getting hooked again. (Still, it's been 30 years and counting <ok>).

Don't get me wrong; if they discovered, like Woody Allen in The Sleeper, that "smoking is good for you and health food gives you cancer" <laugh> I would be tempted to start again- but no more than the temptation to eat a juicy steak (nice, but I can live without it).

    * My substitutes were beer and sandwiches- I gained 1 1/2 stone<cheers> but it's better than smoking.

Hope you all had a good evening, I've just got back from seeing Fable at Start the Bus in Bristol. Met her and LTL and one or two of the band and had a brilliant time. She is seriously talented, believe me. If you ever get a chance to see her live, please go. How she gets that incredible voice to come out of such a small frame is baffling, but she absolutely kicked ass tonight. I'm a bit of a guitar player and I always like watching the various instrumentalists in a band do their stuff, but I honestly couldn't take my eyes off Fable, she is totally mesmerising.

I know it will be a few hours before you get back to Brighton, but cheers LTL for coming to Bristol, and please pass my thanks on to Fable and the guys for a great evening.

Just got back and very keen to see my bed! Absolute pleasure to meet you and Max at the show Chilcs - thank you for taking the time to come along, and delighted you were impressed.

As she said on the way back, "I know as much about football as a koala bear", but we'll make a Saints fan of her yet!

And bars of Cadburys Whole Nut. It's just unfair the way they jump into my trolley when I'm shopping, then sit in the cupboard screaming "Eat me!" until I accede to their wishes ............

Got it there, Pie! I was lucky, gave up at 23 when my daughter was born (kind if made a pact with myself) and very happy I did. Mind you, I smoked for 11 years (yeah do the maths) and now wish I hadn't. My son now smokes and I'm constantly nagging him the way only an ex-smoker can do ......
Susan - all these suggestions are good. If you struggle with the willpower thing (as I do with chocolate!) get to a stop smoking group - I've heard they really do help. Otherwise I've been told that hypnotism is a good way too.
    Good luck!!

Haven't heard Fable, but I'm genuinely interested in good local talent on the music scene. Could you or someone PM me a link or put one on here? Is she playing locally sometime soon? Sounds like someone I'd enjoy going to see! Cheers!

I tried everything to quit, only one way worked; e-cigarettes. Now I just puff on one of those. Not ideal I know, but I haven't actually smoked for a year now.

A dreadful day is approaching....as stressful as death, divorce and moving house....need to buy a new computer:confused: This one is getting harder to resuscitate every morning. I don't mind buying it and don't mind paying someone to load it up for me....it's all the other stuff. I usually sort out things by trial and error and then forget how I did it....like that little row of favourite thingies at the top, informing security company, making it work my printer (first find disc), and introducing it to your internet. Thank heavens I've printed off all my holiday stuff already. I must do it now before this one finally shuffles off its mortal coil. <rose>

P.s. No one...no one...should feel any desire to help me. I am beyond help and will probably reach through the screen and strangle you.

What do you need a computer for Fran? I recommend just getting a tablet. Tesco s Hudl2 is only £100 at the moment, does everything you need plus a nice big hd screen.

I prefer a laptop (having tried my friend's tablet). I accept there may be better ones out there, but I found it hard to hit the target with my fingers...it always assumed I meant the line above or below the one I was tapping. OK if nothing else available, but I'd rather have a proper keyboard. I may get both eventually as a tablet is more mobile, but replacing the lap top is getting priority for now.

Harry Shearer will probably be leaving the Simpsons after this season. He voices Flanders, Skinner, Lenny, Mr Burns, Otto amongst other. The show-runners are apparently gonna keep going even if he leaves.

Just pack it in guys. Quality has been awful for years and losing half your characters must surely be the end.
