I think it was the hotel.

Depay met ayre in a manchester hotel. the lad was prob then flown to a mansion in cheshire via helicopter and told LFc met him in liveprool and the whole city is like that ****hole ayre chose with the bars o nthe windows and whores lining the lobby... rats gnawing on the carpets etc.

Ayre and his cheap biros and old mans pullover with the holes in it doesn't inspire confidence but to meet a potential player in manchester... mortal sin that.

When depay turned in on july 1 he is in for an awful shock.

Hark at you taking the piss out of the ponytail when he actually won a cup at LFC, that's one more than the entire playing staff at EFC have managed for their club.<whistle>

Well we couldn't sign very good players even when we were in the CL, but the losses of not being in the CL next year compared to this year will eb significantly different. That CL TV deal from BT which kicks in next season has the potential to help the current top 4 to break away from everyone else financially.

None of the those players were world class when you signed them (Well Sturridge still isnt imo, but the other two).
All 3 of those players were journeyman when you signed them, and became much better later on. Thats a gamble, that, in those 3 cases, paid off.
Liverpool kinda need to upgrade NOW, not in a season or two.

  8. When was the last time we signed a world class player? We usually sign them beforehand and turn them into world class talents :)

Another cost is "Ranking" whenever we get back into the Champion League. In another word "Not seeded".

A decent run in the Europa would help with that. It really needs help as it 42nd now and next summer you lose the points from 10/11 season and it could go lower.

  12. The points that make up the ranking system are more or less the same for both the CL and EL. A decent effort in the EL will see the same return as the CL. The level of opponent makes no difference to this system.

I agree... the gourp stage of europa is a peice of piss and we can play half kids get wins and take a lot more points than we would in CL. We too ka lousy 12 points this season. If we took a last 16 like everton it'd be 15.

Thing is we've often underwhelmed in the Europa league as well because we usually haven't had the squad to cope with a good EL run and a top 4 finish, and we usually end up failing on both counts

Not quite - you get two extra ranking points for the CL group stage and five extra ranking points for last 16 in the CL.

You got more ranking points for coming 3rd in your CL group this year than for winning your EL group in 2013. And last year we got almost the same ranking points for a CL QF as the eventual EL winners got.

Quality of opponents is lower in the group stage of the EL, but not once you get out of it - Besiktas are probably on a par with Basel and some way better than Ludogrets.

Ranking may not count if you are not in the Group of Death. Imagine, if you have to be in Barcelona group along with two or three league leaders in Europe?.

like it or no... everton got 16.7 points. we got 12.7

Points are awarded for winning games.

    you have to

    a) build your ranking

    b) build your team and its experience and capability

    c) take things seriously.

everton only got one more round than us.

yes cheslea took 23.7 point from their efforts and arsenal 22.7

but reality check for LFC fans. If you are NOT GOOD ENOUGH... you need to work to improve and this is a great way of doing it.

  18. There is a BBC article explaining how the points system worked a few weeks ago and the only differences were at the qualifying stage and the doubling of points being awarded started at the knockout stage in the CL but QF stage in EL.

Can't recall there being points awarded for group positioning or progress through rounds, it was purely based on the result of each game. although that may just be my memory.

    Edit: found it...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31846850

    Champions League
First qualifying round elimination - 0.5 points
Second qualifying round elimination - 1 point
Group stage participation - 4 points
Group stage win - 2 points
Group stage draw - 1 point

    Round of 16 participation - 4 points

Clubs are awarded an additional point if they reach the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.

Points are not awarded for elimination in the third qualifying round or play-offs as teams move to the Europa League and are awarded points for participation in that competition.

    Europa League
First qualifying round elimination - 0.25 points
Second qualifying round elimination - 0.5 points
Third qualifying round elimination - 1 point
    Play-off elimination - 1.5 points
Group stage win - 2 points
Group stage draw - 1 point

Clubs are guaranteed a minimum of two points if they reach the group stage and are awarded an additional point if they get to the quarter-finals, semi-finals or final.

So as I said, qualifying section is different and the CL points double in the knockout stages. Only bit I missed was the 4pts awarded for participating in the CL group stage <ok>

Easier way of saying it is the bits in blue are the same <laugh>

in the end the winners of CL will get 31/32 points and the winners of europa will get 26/27 points.

seville took 5th highest points in total last year by winning it.

It is ALL about building the squad and experience and capability.

This is why spurs **** up all the time. they are not using the experience to grow.

That's entirely down to their superior performance in the knock out rounds.

They won three, lost one and reached the next round, ergo 4 extra points for two more wins and one extra point for getting one round further.

If you'd achieved the same as them in the EL knock out rounds, you'd have 17.7 points, despite having worse results in the group stage, due to the four bonus points for being in the CL groups.

As you say - it's a reality check, if you are not good enough then you won't get as many points regardless of what comp you play in. But the CL gets you that extra cushion which can make a difference even if you perform poorly in the comp.
