some idiot has invented this convoluted system - it'll be bureaucratic nightmare... Could new DVLA driving licence changes leave you stranded at an airport abroad? http://www.manchestereveningnews.co...r-news/could-new-dvla-driving-licence-9186500 The DVLA is scrapping paper driving licences from June 8 and much of the information - such as fines and penalty points - will be stored online instead. The change could have a huge impact on people wanting to hire cars abroad. As well as the plastic photo licence, motorists will now need to obtain a special online code from the DVLA website before they travel. They will need to key in driving licence details and their national insurance number to get the code, which only lasts 72 hours. This means they may need to log in again if they are driving later in the holiday. Hire firms can then call a special hotline to check details and endorsements - but experts fear the new system will cause confusion and delays.
So how many European car hire companies will know the UK licensing system has changed or indeed will wish to go online to check a DVLA code? - plus the code will only last for 72 hours - complete madness ! so much extra hassle for business and long term travellers. I thought Europe was supposed to be 'open' - and to imagine that some unimaginative jobs-worth bureaucrat has thought of this daft system as a way forward - ffs
Will it offer me any help with the 2 x speeding camera offences I got when I was last in Spain - not paid yet, no intention of paying unless I need to go back to Spain and hire a car...
Man after my own heart Do enough driving day to day to want to do it on holiday, especially when there's so much beer to be drunk
Some bureaucrat has thought of that one http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...g-Europe-tracked-fined-home-new-EU-rules.html
Overstated problem. My French License is an all plastic thing with a chip on it. Not points details on it (if I had any!). Worked fine in the UK a couple of weeks ago. Everyone else dumped paper a while ago...
One of the reasons (among others) why I have never fancied it. Our lass and the bairns have been a couple of times, but I have given it a miss..
Can't understand this, the plastic card has all the same info as the paper one as far as I know, as well as a photo ID. I hire cars in Spain and other countries including Oz on a regular basis and I only ever show the plastic. ??
it doesn't show your DVLA penalty points - I done some reading yesterday that states that the majority of the major foreign hire companies will accept just the plastic card - but certainly not all of them and certainly not all countries in Europe will accept just the plastic card for hire
all of the EU use the plastic photo license. And acceptance of them is an EU requirement. Could be that some European NON-EU countries might have an issue, but they also definitely don't like the older UK paper non-photo license. @diddles: who and where won't accept them?
I was gonna say welcome mate but noticed you joined last May. Post a bit more EC. The more the madder the merrier!
