a year and a bit - but he's already a fans' favourite.

Almost exactly one year ago we published the results of a vote in which you told us Roberto Martinez was Swansea's best manager

Garry Monk, having only taken over a few months earlier following the sacking of Michael Laudrup, polled just 22 votes out of the 585 cast, finishing fifth.

What a difference a year makes!

Just shows the attention span of the average person
Have a decent year and you are the best, the greatest...lose a few in a row and you are ****.
Clearly the best managers we've ever had were Toshack, McCandless, Martinez, Laudrup, Brendan etc
Even Flynn, Jackett, and Sousa have achieved more as managers of this club IMO.

Martinez is still by far our best. Another few seasons like this under Monk and that might change but for now it's RM and BR way out in front.

not really wanting to get embroiled in "the everlasting argument" but just noted on 606 (ok, my fault for listening!!) they were talking about the best managers of the season. Mourinho got mentioned, obviously but the other two that they put forward were Sean Dysche and Nigel Pearson. Whatever your thoughts on Garry, how he got the job, etc, I think he's done a better job than either of those two.
 
But Jose with tens of millions to spend should be top 3. The way I see it, give Monk 150-200million to spend like LVG and BR had last summer and we'd have walked top 4. Monk has done a remarkable Job but won't get the credit as the same 'experts' expected us to be relegation fodder.

Valley - I'd like to agree with you but splashing £150-£200m, per se, is no guarantee of a Top 4 finish.

How much did Spurs blow last season (all of the Bale transfer monies and more?) and they still ended up in the a Europa League?

How much did Brendan spend last Summer - and the best they'll do is finish 5th this year.

With that much money to spend, clubs get shafted (or shaft themselves) by paying too much - the selling clubs know that there is an obscene amount of money available, as do the players and their agents.

At the end of the day, it is all about building a team "sensibly" and developing/evolving from there. <cheers>
 
Swansea City are 17 points better off after 35 games which is the BEST points swing in the Premier League and this hasn't happened by accident.

What has impressed me about Monk is that this young, inexperienced, English manager stepped into the role amongst much criticism yet has seamlessly continued our clubs progression without missing a heart beat.

He certainly doesn't have the charisma of Martinez, Souza, Rodgers or Laudrup and in reality can't and maybe shouldn't be singled out as 'the best' amongst them.

Martinez began it all and much, much Kudos will always go to him, Souza steadied us when we could have gone backwards and added missing grit to our game, (imo, this is what Monk is doing now). Rodgers then made all of our dreams come true and Laudrup continued our courtship with the premiership, won us a cup and made critics and fans alike sit up and believe that football was a game to be enjoyed and Swansea a club to be admired.

It was argued at the time that we'd probably peak under Laudrup as, a club our size simply had no where else to go, but, along came Monk who dashed this exaggeration and to the surprise of many, has taken us forward yet again.

I know Monk is not everyone's cup of tea and agree that he stands on the shoulders of giants but I contend his performance as manager has been exemplary and has matched all his predecessors. Monk tenure has seamlessly continued our evolution in the vein as those mentioned above.

Under Monk we now live in an unfamiliar world of acceptance, where Swansea City are no longer talked of as relegation fodder but as an established premier league club and we've never, ever been able to say that before.

Swansea best manager ever - John Toshack imho.
