People have the right to protest, and many were doing peacefully. The idiot or idiots who vandalised the memorial, have not only been disrespectful to those who it was built for, but it shames those who were out demonstrating yesterday. The vast majority were protesting in a decent, respectful way, with no malice, and all I am saying is that this terrible act has enabled the press and the media to vilify them all the same way.

I agree Al, but you didn't say that clearly in your original post. It read to me like a gripe that it wouldn't have had decent coverage - the crime of the graffiti far out weighs the 'crime' of the media not giving enough coverage to a peaceful demonstration. You didn't mention vilifying the whole protest originally and so it came across a little to me that the meaning of the demonstration should have greater coverage in your eyes. Personally, I just can not abide people who take negative/criminal protestations in the form of things such as the graffiti, no matter how valid or not their point is.
One of the organizers made the point that a greater fuss was being made about the memorial than what they were protesting about. When will they learn that things like that damage your message. If defacing memorials cured all the ills in the world there would be no protest from me, but it doesn't. They have learnt nothing from the horror when some lout swung on the Cenotaph. You don't win the hearts of the people by hooliganism...you distance them. It will confirm in most people's minds that they put the right party in if lefties behave like this. Of course most socialists wouldn't behave like that....this is the looney, antidemocratic fringe...but sometimes the message is everything and they have sent out the wrong message.
