Zero hours contracts. Lots of people dismiss the coalition's record on job creation as "only being **** low paid work", "treated like slaves on zero hour contracts" etc. The reality is that only 1 in 50 of the 2 million jobs created under the coalition were "zero hour contract" jobs. Look around you, do you know anyone on a zero hours contract? I do and have asked these people about it. I know a few students who work this way, bar staff and waiters..."it suits" them. I know a few housewives who work part-time this way, cleaners and waitresses "It's fine, only a second income" I know of 1 family man who is self-employed and "does a couple of shifts a week at the local pub....just some extra cash" I am yet to encounter anyone who feels like a "slave". It's work they choose and suits both parties as the employer doesn't have to pay wages they can't afford when things are slow and the employee can pick and choose shifts that suit them best. e.g. the family man went on holiday recently and didn't give more than a fortnight's notice...I asked him if that was a problem and he replied "nah, they know I don't need the job anyway....their grateful that I'm available at all" So why is this being made out to be such a big problem? It is a tiny fraction of the job market. The answer is of course; because the coalition has created an environment which has helped businessmen in this country create 2 million jobs over 5 years and unemployment is drastically down. Because most of these jobs are private sector jobs (bit more difficult to achieve than Gordon Brown's policy of employing everybody). Because this is putting more money in people's pockets than otherwise would be and is helping to drive growth faster than the rest of Europe and even America. So can Phillip, or anybody else answer me this? If an incoming Labour government abolish zero hour contracts and as a result your local Pub has to employ 2 full time staff and have them work long hours but lay off 6 part time staff on zero-hour contracts Is this a good thing in your view? If the policy results in more unemployed people is this a price worth paying?
Not joking but i'm working hard and i am only renting a room which i share with a partner and share a 2 bedroom flat with my cousin and his partner. I'm all for helping people who are not as fortunate as me in housing and buying food and all that but why should they be having the luxury of having additional rooms when 1. they do not need them 2. they are not paying for them. Therefore, i think the bedroom tax is a fair policy provided people have been given the choice of moving out. They aren't forcing people out of their homes, they are just saying to make it a fairer system you should contribute a little extra (which is a lot less than anyone else who lives privately) for your additional room which is a LUXURY.
I dont know many pubs that dont pay cash in hand. What you have to remember and what people are saying on zero hours is they have bills to pay just like everyone else and they get into arrears when their employer says to them that he/she dont need them today and i will let you know when i need you next.....That is wrong and exploiting people .......you either employ them part time or full time or not at all where there is a safe guard for the unemployed.....zero hours is a con to get the unemployment figures down and should be stopped....
not only bringing the numbers of unemployed down dai, also getting past previous workers rights.of which for almost one hundred years working men and women fought hard 2 get..........all taken away in one big swoop, and everything blamed on cheap foreign workers no doubt does anyone on here know how William crawshay got his money..... a truly cruel man that reminds me of the way business works today, he got a lot while the workers got a little and the little they got ended up back in his pocket
please log in to view this image George Orwell (1903 – 1950) – Author of Animal Farm and 1984, Orwell helped to warn of the dangers of totalitarian states. He also wrote in support of the disadvantaged sections of society, and criticised imperialism. the problems he could see bk then(65yrs ago) are still relevant today..............shame on us for not listening when the great minds speak.....instead we live on thy words of politicians
So are we all saying that you would prefer that these people should end up back on the dole queue then? We are not talking about millionaire employers in a lot of these circumstances, we are usually talking about a small businessman....you can't force these people to employ people on full time contracts can you. Or can you? Dai. I am yet to meet one zero hours contract worker who depends on this income to pay for mortgage, food, energy etc. These people usually work these sorts of jobs for some extra cash. Examples where workers are being exploited (being asked to work full time hours, 52 weeks of the year and yet not getting a full time contract) should be dealt with.... Where this arrangement suits both parties I see no need to change it.
"So are we all saying that you would prefer that these people should end up back on the dole queue then"? no im saying these people should have a contract that follows the so called laws of employment .....just out of interest terror would you be ok working maybe one day this week a full week next and no hours the week after that........how do you think you would fair if you showed the bank a docket with no guaranteed hours if you wanted a mortgage or any other loan for that matter.
Phil, we have different political views on here. Reply to posts respectfully or don't bother replying. That was bang out of order.
The only party with a sensible long term economic plan are the Liberals. Problem is being in the centre they're never going to get the 'hate' vote that Labour and the Tories rely upon ie if you hate Right vote Left and vice versa. I will vote Conservative simply in the hope of Gower becoming/remaining as marginal a seat as possible, and hence drawing maximum attention from both major parties whoever gets in.
That's right aber, I would rather listen to people on Zero hour contracts and their problems which some you have correctly stated.....These people have no choice to but take up these contracts after the wonderful Ian D S have told them they would cut or stop their benefits. It's one huge con to get the unemployment figures down just like they force people to do made up courses with no job after it.....Would these MP's do these courses ? most courses people are not interested in but they are forced to do them so the unemployment figures look good...In reality there are over 3m without a proper job....Con by name Con by nature that don't give two hoots about the middle and working classes....
I've yet to see Terror show respect to other posters view point? Anyway The Tory Scum are out that's the most important thing, then second to that The Libdem will be a none entity, I'll send him a get well card after the results.................
I like nick but he has made one hell of a blunder in stating that he has made this country better, he should have let the deluded tory party brag about that and kept his mouth shut....That statement alone have lessons his parties chances of success and i can honestly see him resigning tomorrow morning because of a vote of no confidence by his own party.....
You know aber I laugh my socks off at some your off the wall comments at times, but I believe this to be the best post I have ever seen you post.
The Tories are scum, and the liberals whores, sorry if the truth hurts. As for Labour they not much better than them, UKIP are racists and the national parties deluded. I like the greens but their policies are unrealistic, well apart from their anti austerity stance.
You've pretty much described my working month there Aber. I'm self-employed.....and a long time ago I was a barman who started as a student doing a few shifts whenever they needed me and whenever I was available. After Uni I stayed on for a while and ended up running that bar for a while (regular hours, doing the rota, ordering the stock, taking deliveries, dreaming up promotions etc.). When I needed new staff a lot of people, a lot, only wanted to work 16 hour weeks due to other benefits they were in receipt of being cut if they worked more (they could have worked more but it was only worth a little more money to them....so they chose the more leisure time option)....I remember 1 such bloke who would tell me when he would prefer to work his 16 hours and I would try to accommodate....during a slow period I would tell him when I wanted him to work his 16 hours. It worked for everybody. If somebody in that such situation then accumulates more bills to pay....more than he could afford if he only works 8 hours 1 week out of every 4 for example....that would be foolish on his part don't you think?
Good article, particularly like the part of the liberals, and what they have done http://www.newstatesman.com/politic...kind-leader-you-put-t-shirt-he-still-needs-my
I don't mind ridiculing other political viewpoints, however, I found your post ridiculing on a personal level
"It worked for everybody". only because you worked together, trouble is you try and paint the picture that people are like sims, but we are talking about real families wanting 2make plans for themselves and they couldnt because they don't know what tomorrow brings.......im not sure what world you live in terror but many people in the working classes that live in the south wales valleys will take loans out for cars, housing and very few could pay cash for anything other than your normal shopping outlay I tell thee. try some simple mathematics terror.......you get say 150 pay one wk, but your rent costs you 80, work travel costs 20, gas electric 30, whats left for any kinda worth while life hey>>>>>>>no fking wonder suicide is at a all time high in wales hey...........so all in all im telling you crime pays more and its been caused by the system that should be helping not hindering after all we pay every penny they get and a lot more if they are truly honest>>>>>fk me honesty and politics in the same thread>>>>there`s a first
