Got a new laptop. Downloaded itunes.

Turns out you can't just plug your ipod in and get it to copy all your music off it, and sync it nicely in your itunes library on the computer. There is no way at all.

Therefore, I have been googling and found that there are programs claiming to be able to do this, as it is a problem that has infuriated many, not just me. Many of them, though, seem to be Mac only (I'm windows), look basic or, possibly worse, are just **** and dodgy.

So, I can't be the only itunes user on here. Has anyone had the same issue, and emerged successful from it? If so, how? Have you used one of these programs?

As I'm sure people know, Itunes isn't merely a case plonking one set of songs from one place to another, once in itunes they can be personalised track by track (volumes amended for quieter tracks, album artworks etc), and this is something I've done. I don't want to have to do this all again if I can help it, or start ripping cds again. I am a busy man, and it is boring - not to mention already done, if itunes would just let me carry it over!

    Help would be appreciated.

If you have an iTunes account - you need to register etc - you should be able to synchronise one iPod with it. If you can't, you're not doing something correctly. Apple have loads of support, which is not perfect, but can be helpful.

I take it your old computer is bust so you can't copy the tunes from that?

    It's more than creaking.

I think I could take the mp3s off with a storage device and load them back in, but I'd have to re-do all the editing of the songs again. Ideally, I'd like a clean copy of my stuff as it is on my ipod now.

Starting to think that isn't possible though.

I have an itunes account, and I can restore all my purchases from itunes perfectly.

The problem I have is that they only make up so much of my library, the rest are mp3s from Amazon and, more problematically, rips from cds.

From what I've read, itunes removed the function of being able to sync from a device to a new computer, that was previously available, as a way of combatting piracy. Of course, if for legitimate reasons you need to do it (ie, new computer or failed hard drive), then you're stuck. This is why these programs have been created.

Yes, my old computer doesn't even turn off, it has to be hit with an object.

This is going to be disappointingly unhelpful, but may give hope!

I had the same problem and I sorted it by downloading some software which ripped the files off the iPod and dropped it into the new laptop......but I just can't remember what it was!

It needed a bit of a tidy up as s few songs got duplicated, but it worked

I can only suggest a google session looking for advice of people who actually know what they are talking about! It can be done though

Well that is very positive. If it pings back into your mind, then please do post it.

In the meantime, I'll get searching.

Sorry I can't find the software on the laptop
Having a browse around SharePod rings a bell, but I am not responsible ( in many many ways!)

I'll take the plunge with one of these progs, and cross my fingers that they don't give me computer AIDS.

If you do have computer problems I'd recommend Peckhams, under the arches behind Asda on Holderness Rd

Dutch suggested them, and I've used them a couple of times

    City fan too.

PUP's aren't viruses, just programs you don't want (Potentially Unwanted Programs) ...... usually harmless but sometimes toolbars, browser redirects, search engines

What's wrong with putting your favourite tracks on a cassette?

Not rocket science is it son?

They always try to shove toolbars in don't they?

I try to keep an eagle eye out for hidden boxes to untick at the start of installation, but quite a lot of programs still sneak them in somehow.

My old laptop used to virtually groan when I booted it up, possibly in part thanks to all the additional **** downloaded over the years. My new one is clean as a whistle when it boots, so I'm wary of abusing it with unknown programs right off the bat!
