Well, I guess a Labour supporter would go for the 70cl bottle and a Tory supporter would go for the 100cl bottle. Joke, before anyone bites my head off.
This is the famous West Lothian Question first raised by the Scottish Labour MP Tam Dalyell back in the 1980's. It has been ignored in the past as you say Vin, when Scotland had a majority of either Tory or Labour MP's who would follow the party line on votes involving only English matters. If the SNP vote with English Labour MP's on English matters I'm not sure why this paradox is morally any different from what it was when it was Scottish Labour or Scottish Tory MP's voting with their English counterparts. If the SNP don't form a coalition and then vote according to their own policies on English or Welsh matters then yes, that is outrageous and is worthy of condemnation, but if they are in a coalition supporting a UK government, or even just part of a loose agreement with the government, then what is wrong with that?
Okay, so... 1. I've passed my Theory Test today. 2. I'm doing the election count tomorrow in the New Forest 3. Labour didn't cause the financial crisis, but were borrowing and spending quite a bit for the run-up. Labour had a surplus around 2001 and after that, with high revenues, spending and borrowing increased quite a bit, making us quite hardly hit. The financial crisis was a banking crisis, allowed to happen with deregulation which started in the 1980s.
if you don't care, still go to the polling station and spoil your vote. you are still taking part in democracy even if you aren't voting for anyone. draw a cock on the ballot paper ANYHING, just go!
SNP talk about unelected Tory governments, but England voted Tory in 2005 and got a Labour government, who ran English departments and could get Scottish and Welsh MPs to vote on English-only laws. At least Scottish MPs have full say on some areas and voters have full say over who the Holyrood government is who will have control of some departments.
It is me Vin! Good people those two. I am picking them up at a train station near me and taking them to Leicester Saturday. Funny where you form friendships.
I'm giving a talk in July on the six degrees of separation (amongst other things). I'll add this one in. I'm off to Leicester as well, so if you're with them I'll see you. Vin
That'd be good. Is your lad coming? If you have their number, call them on the day so we can meet up, or pm me yours. I can give you loads of incredible examples of 6 degrees of separation... one of my recent favourites was sitting at a wine tasting in Birmingham hotel in November (I know nobody from Birmingham), when after a few minutes talking I realise the guy sat next to my wife sits in the same office as the man I have a first appointment with the next Wednesday ... boy did that make my meeting go easier!
When it's SNP MPs being the factor that allows Labour to get policies affecting England only through parliament it'll be noticed in a way it was never noticed before. At no point did I say it was wrong. I just predict that, coming on top of a close independence vote, the English will start to say "Enough". Maybe even, "In the name of God, go!" to quote a delightful speech (http://www.famous-speeches-and-spee...speech-dissolution-of-the-long-parliament.htm ) Vin
Nice when it helps! My talk in July is actually on the subject of "How to make yourself lucky". In short, one of the many factors affecting luck is how many people you know, which leads into the whole network size subject. So, some people might call that just good luck; I call it having a big enough networks of friends (and being prepared to investigate and have an open mind so you found the link). The direct connection between six degrees and luck is that when the original experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small-world_experiment#Basic_procedure) was repeated a few years ago in the UK, people who considered themselves lucky had shorter routes to the recipient whereas several the people self-reported as unlucky didn't even send the package to anyone because they thought it couldn't work. I'll try to arrange meeting somehow on Saturday. Vin
You should try working in music Vin - everything's about 3 degrees of separation (no, that wasn't even a purposeful pun either!)
