It worries that MP has felt the need to come out publicly to say he should have the final say on transfers...it is right that he should have the final say imo but it suggests that there is a disagreement about this behind the scenes.
If so it will a difficult transfer window, another season of "transition" and another change of manager.

MP has a definite way he wants to play...imo we have seen some good glimpses of it this season and he clearly does not have the players he feels he needs to do it all season in all competitions.

Imo the are more positives than negatives with MP...

    Negative...
    1) lack of a solid defence
    2) only one striker who scores
    3) losing too often at home to teams we should be taking points off...wba, toon, stoke
    4) some awful individual performances.
    5) too many toothless performances like the villa at home game

    Positives
    1) better football to watch than last few seasons
    2) a decent away record
    3) playing for 90 mins in matches
    4) a big improvement against top clubs...and not just the chelsea match.
Last season arsenal, liverpool and city did the double over us in the prem and we were humiliated v liverpool and city in both games and never looked like even scoring v the goons...this season we were unlucky v liverpool away and city at home and deserved our points v the goons.
    5) far few really awful performances...utd away, 2nd half v toon at home, liverpool at home...last season we had 2 v city, 2 v liverpool, chelsea away, west brom away 1st half, west ham home and away, norwich away...admittedly, we have had some toothless displays this season.
    6) ability to fight for points when not playing well such as villa away, swansea away, west ham at home etc.
    7) a sense of team spirit
    8) some good young players
9)less washing our dirty laundry in public

So, all in all i am optimistic about next season...if MP getsthe players he wants

I can just about see that the manager might be able to specify the specific skills he wants to suit his tactics but how on earth is he going to determine which players have those skills and can be signed for a reasonable price? That's what the DoF and the scouting structure is for. All managers seem to suffer from this egotistical view that only they can see good players. It's obvious bollocks.

I assume that MP has told the DoF and the recruitment team some time ago what type of player he wants for next season. He would hardly wait until almost the end of the season to make those decisions. It is only right that he has the final word who we actually sign as it is he who will get the blame from supporters and the board if it doesn't work out ( and of course from Sky, the Fail and the rest of the media).

    It depends.

On the one hand, if Poch identified Schneiderlin as the key piece of the puzzle to improve our central midfield based on his experience coaching him at Southampton it shouldn't be discounted. On the other hand, if Southampton hold out for a £20m+ fee that could affect our other summer business, and there was a similar player available that fits into the £10-15m bracket Levy has set (for the sake of adding a name let's say Ignacio Camacho, whose name has come up a few times in the last month or so) then it's the DoF's job to identify a suitable alternative so we don't get a repeat of the Moutinho failure.

Based on the players we've been linked with in recent weeks, the main positions Poch has identified as needing improvement are...
    Central midfield (Delph, Camacho, Schneiderlin)
    Central defence (Wimmer, Savic, Glik)

At this juncture I should point out that our DOF is a certain Mr Baldini, who, by the way he seems to have been marginalised somewhat by the club, seems to be being held responsible for the numerous disastrous signings we have made. I can't believe that a competent manager couldn't do better than that.

Yes, a good scouting system is essential. However, in my view the final say on any new signing should rest with the manager - assuming that is that the financial side of things has been sorted. The manager is the man held responsible if a team fails to perform to expectations, how can he be held to account if his players are not those of his choosing?

They see the players in the squad many hours a week working under conditions they define. How could they possibly make the same judgements about players at other clubs who they can watch once or twice at most?

I doubt they watch players once or twice at most. They'll have SO many live games, televised games and scouting videos to agonise over.
Hell, i'm not an obsessive watcher of non-Spurs games but i've seen most the players we are linked with more than once or twice.

In almost every other walk of life new bosses come in and are expected to improve results without wholesale and expensive changes in personnel. Football is just about the only one where managers are apparently so inept that they can only work with staff of their own choosing. I don't object to the manager identifying one or two weaknesses and bringing in players to address those but even then in the non-football world the boss would use headhunters or his personnel department to help choose the new people.
And if we have made 'numerous disastrous signings' how come we are 6th in the league with the 6th most expensive squad? Our signings are exactly as good as we should expect them to be.

Nonsense! We are where we are owing to a combination of luck and the generally poor standard of our competitors this season. We have conceded more goals than virtually anybody outside of the bottom three. We are where we are thanks to the goals of Kane, and several very late winners from Eriksen. Our position flatters to deceive.

The vast majority of our signings, such as Lamela, Paulinho, Soldado, were overrated and grossly overpriced. As I put in my previous post, our director of football appears to be being held to account over that.

We have no more over-rated grossly over-priced players than anyone else. The City starting XI on Sunday cost more than our whole squad but looked no better on the pitch.

That was just one game, and one game only. City were way below their best. They have an aging side, and two of their driving force players were on the bench.

Lamela supposedly has potential?? For 30 mil quid I expect more than possible potential. Similarly. Paulinho & Soldado were overrated and we paid far too much for both.

A study was published today of the best U23 players in Europe, divided by position.
All of the usual suspects are included (Neymar, Pogba, Isco, Gotze), though there are a few surprises.
A number of our players make it. Kane and Eriksen are included, which will shock nobody, but it's nice to see Bentaleb in there. And Lamela...

Burnley's Michael Keane makes the defensive list. I wonder if anyone will move for him in the summer?
He only recently transferred from Man Utd, but I doubt he'll want to play in the Championship, if he can avoid it.

Going by the article, this is what our recruitment structure will look like in the summer...
First team: Poch and Paul Mitchell
    Youth team: Freund
    ???: Baldini

In retrospect, this article does sound a few warnings about what Baldini is like with an open chequebook: http://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnatio...franco-baldini-transfers-scouting-youth-spurs

From a club point of view i hope? He was a terrible striker coach but being banished from the country is pretty harsh
