I've had exactly the same experience in my business, hence my understanding of the issue. We're dramatically more productive than we were pre-the crash and our turnover has rapidly increased, but margins are that tight that we're making no more cash and there's nothing left in the tin to increase wages to where we'd ideally like them to be. So we're having to be reative in exactly the same way you describe there, as opposed to being able to review the entire wage structure across the spectrum and give people a sensible yearly increase.

So how would there these small businesses cope with an increase of the minimum wage to the living wage? Unfortunately in this capitalist society we live in, it means people are going to have to be laid off and that means more unemployment. Instead I believe we should be looking to reduce the cost of living.

That means re-nationalising services that we need or at least trying to decrease the cost of living. Utilities, Travel, Subsistence (saying that isn't food relatively cheap at aldi and places like that).

  3. The charity sector will struggle, particularly the smaller charities. There is little funding available nowadays, what is available is very specific to certain causes such as getting people into work. If there is no funding coming in but wages are going up, there is only going to be one ending. A lot of already reached the end and more will follow.

That assumes that re-nationalisation would provide cost reductions that could be passed on to the consumer at a level that created a tangible impact on their disposable income, which it invariably wouldn't.

As for how small business should cope with living wage, it'd be a long term project that would need people who live and work in this country to pay their way in terms of taxation. Closing corporation tax loop holes, tax haven status etc etc and putting this cash back into the public purse. From the pockets of bloated corporations and the 0.1 of the population who aren't currently paying pro rata like the rest of the Nation. The cash raised could be used to reduce overall corporation tax by the level necessary to provide a living wage.

the problem with the living wage is england sits apart in europe and is seeing the euro collapse beside it so ireland is supplying much cheaper goods in as a result for one example food in particular..

The print industry is another example. italy supplies shed loads of flexibles. so a print house in mansfield can't compete.

of the now defunct paper mill industry in uk. its all in finland where sisu is but thats been happening for years

Sterling is in need of a devaluation

rubber is vulcanised within the process it for converts natural rubber into more durable forms by adding sulphur or other curatives. These additives modify the polymer by forming cross chains and makes them stronger, more durable and less tacky,
