  1. Not having that. Being tired doesn't mean you can't put a tackle in. Being tired doesn't mean you can't pass a ball. Being tired doesn't mean you don't care! Besides all that, being tired is a BS excuse anyway.

Tiredness leads to fatigue. Which leads to a drop in performance.

Not saying that's the only excuse but keeping a squad fresh is crucial.

Don't want to sound like one of Monty Pythons Four Yorkshiremen, but in the 70's and 80's we played just as many games, if not more, and none of our players were ever to "tired" to play and needed a rest.

Could you imagine, Tommy Smith, Emlyn Hughes, etc going to Shankly or Paisley and saying they needed a rest as they were "tired".

On a match day players in those days walked miles to the ground, often carrying elderley fans, after working 20 hours down pit, etc....and you try telling the kids of today, and they won't believe you!!

Terry McDermott's pre match routine was downing 20 pints of lager and smoking a few cigarettes on the Friday and eating a massive fried breakfast on the morning of the game.:emoticon-0165-muscl

The game may be faster, but there is hardly any tackling so less knocks. If you watch Leeds v Chelsea from the late 60's and see some of the tackles. Today's players would be running to the dressing room after 5 minutes.

Ah I don't know about this stuff really.

    I really don't

In the 1970s did anyone die of sads playing? I just have to wonder.

Yes there were more games and today in championship there are more games played over shorter time

Yes today the game is faster

I just don't know where the truth falls. I've seen a lot of old games that look frankly like trotting about

True but stats show that players run more km's nowadays, and there are more short sprints. Agree that there were more harmful injuries back in the day but muscle/tissue injuries are a more frequent these days which makes squad rotation crucial - especially as the game is now full of smaller, tricky, faster players.

Where have these stats come from?
Back in the 60s-90s most of the pitches were like ploughed fields and clung to the players heavy boots weighing them down, the balls were heavy and held water (they didn`t skim on a wet pitch they sank), there was only one substitute per game (in case of injury) and in the main the same 11 turned out week after week. Yet after all this players never complained of being tired or needing rotation.
There were quite a few small, tricky, fast players around too <ok>

Also players have dieticians and a whole host of medical specialists including shrinks to optimize their performances and are much fitter to cope with todays speed and distance ran.Not to forget technically advanced boots, strips (much lighter than the old days) and of course much lighter ball.
Sorry can't agree with the "tired" reason for under performance.

I remember my days in school, if you are playing (especially when it is raining) and you headed the ball
the ball being soaked in water becomes heavy you feel the pain in your neck for few hours after the game.
Ball are so light in modern era.The boots you are playing with then cannot be compared with modern boots. We also have fewer injuries then.

    I dunno

as there's video i'd like some actual stats based of old games to give some sort of average distance covered stat to make a comparison.

As has been said above though, even if quite a bit more ground is covered these days it wouldn't take into account the effort and energy used with those boggy pitches and heavy boots etc.

Don't get me wrong, the guys these days are athletes and fit as **** - but there is also a lot of bitching that goes on that real men back in the day wouldn't dream of

well thing is old days could have simply stood more static and lumped it about for all i know.

theses days you see a god awful pitch as described it does go longer.

The thing is if you didn't train half as much then two games a week becomes easier.

however I do want to contrast a say 10km or marathon runner of olympic standard v a pro footballer at highest level.

A runner would prob do the 10-12km a footballer runs twice a week every day and at the same speed but a footballer over 90mins does it in sprints etc etc.

can this be used as a comparision?

I see Sturridge has had his hip op (isn't that a music genre). Wonder what his next injury will be

Hip op sounds very very serious to me.

    Anyone hear any more details?

Roy Keane had one which sounded very huge... if it was like that he's phooked

Saying all that, players are a bunch of pansies.

Only beed red to look at rugby players who run just as much if not more including short sharp bursts take even bigger knocks and still get on with it.
