lol thanks for that John, again, if my memory serves me right we signed him after he mauled our defence once or twice, another Chilton but nowhere near as good as it turned out and I think he cost a fair bit of money for the time. I'm surprised he scored as many as 6 goals for us but he missed many more, he's spent a lot of time on the bench since
It weird but we've not had a league game with Grimsby Town in my lifetime. It's sad we pass them in our claim up the Football League.
The internet the place for men to let out all the hatred and rage. Good luck to Grimsby. Though i do have a soft spot for Bristol Rovers as i was a ball boy against them for City. Think it was when they won the league or got promoted and invaded the pitch at Boothferry Park???
Well done Grimsby. People forget that they were playing in the old first division before we were even founded. Hull v Grimsby always was, and always will be, THE local derby.
That rivalry was reignited in the 2003/04 season, when we were battling with them to win the league. They played some very decent football that season, I seem to remember they used to be able to pick up some good loan signings, as they had a reputation for playing good football.
FAO CITYFiley It's been two or three night games a season - the old boys active enough, it's just he's not so keen on driving in the dark anymore, we live in a small village community so looking out for each other is the norm.
Craig in Nottingham said: Who cares what happens to Grimsby? Do you think they give a **** about us? In the world where: City fans needed to be escorted out of Blundell Park in 1979 for our own safety. Where Grimsby took every opportunity to take the piss out of us whenever they were higher in the league. Where they loved every minute of watching us struggle for survival in 98 Where they've hated watching our success ever since as they decline. What world do you live in... X-Box Land?
Was that in 77-78 Chaz? They, (Bristol), needed to beat us in the last game to stay up, which they duly did, 0-1 and then invaded the pitch at full time, most of them came up on a "football special", and, as was sometimes the case back then, they were allowed to go and cause mayhem along Anlaby Road before kick-off, I had three scarves nicked that season on Anlaby Road, one of them was on the way to this game, I think this is what turned me into the twisted, bitter **** that I am today.
Craig, here's an example of the real land that I live in. Many moons back, when I lived on the high street in Lincoln, I was setting off with my then very young son off to the Imps v Hull City game at Sincil bank. Before I could get to my car and pick up our scarves, we were bayed at, both of us physically threatened with one feckwit actually coming towards us with a bottle until thankfully a policeman stepped in. The group who kicked off wouldn't listen and assumed we were locals. Yes it was our fans. On that basis and logic, should I wish us bad luck then? I love Lincolnshire, but it has more moaners and green eyed types per square yard than anywhere else I know of, however, not all of them even in Grimsby and Scunny wish us bad luck! Mind you, as luck with have it, I caught up with the bottle threatening bottom wipe in the loos whilst he was having a piss. It's amazing how far piss can travel up a wall when your arse gets kicked. It wasn't you was it?
Ahh was it to stay up? My mistake. Ye i was the ball boy on the Kempton side and they were all in there. I was the quickest one into the tunnel when that whistle went.
No mate I preferred music to violence then (and now), and I'm sorry for your encounter, but it doesn't really change the truth that they have always begrudged our success and vice versa. Do you remember many Grimsby supporters coming on here to congratulate us when we were last promoted to the Prem? ... I don't.
Likewise on the music and violence issue Craig, and I regret that incident very much - though I am sure you can understand my anger as my son was threatened and was scared ****less. I am not normally moved to violence. Ironically, I too don't remember any Codheads coming on here, and only one or two Iron fans saying well done. Moreover, I remember many of them moaning about us all season on BBC Radio 'Back to Back Housing' (Humberside). That was the point I was making about envy...but where are they now? They'll be back for sure, if we ever go down. However, I can tell you that piss taking aside, with each promotion quite a number of my colleagues who are fans of all the Lincolnshire sides said well done. A couple even commiserated when we went down. I am just saying I wouldn't tar all of their fans with the same brush...
It just goes to show what well intentioned, good mannered, kindly, outward looking, nicely balanced folk Hull people are, doesnt it?
What you're saying about rival fans being friendly in a one on one situation is also the case in my experience. I can't remember fans of any club being aggressive to me when I've met them (usually the contrary), but in anonymous situations like the internet or radio (or mob mentality like you experienced) they express the group dynamic. In Grimsby's case that is negative to us as ours is to them.
You don't have to stoop to their level though do you? I have nothing but admiration and respect for supporters of small clubs like Grimsby. Those supporters know full well they will never reach the Premier league, but they carry on regardless. There's been so much crap about who's a real fan on here. Look to the likes of Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Torquay (and Leeds), they are the real fans.
