The biggest problem with assessing the 1000 Guineas card this early is not knowing how much of the forecast rain will hit the Rowley Mile. It was running very quick on Saturday. I noticed after the races that a couple of horses were fitted with ‘rubber’ shoes, presumably because they were feeling their feet.
The Dahlia Stakes always turns up some good older fillies and mares and this year looks no exception. Fintry did not win first time up last term but Andre Fabre won the race last year so the Godolphin France filly cannot be ruled out. Sir Michael Stoute has an excellent record in the race and Bragging has the profile of the improving filly that uses this as a stepping stone to better things. Clive Brittain’s filly Rizeena ran in the best races last season and tops the ratings but there has to be a question mark about her beyond a mile, so another chance is taken on Belle D’or who was not given the best of rides on her last start.
There is very little strong evidence to go on in the 1000 Guineas. Pricewise ante post punters have burned their fingers with Together Forever defecting as well as ante post favourite Found. Ballydoyle’s challenge has been reduced to Qualify, who is impossible to assess but has finished behind Lucida. The change of tactics on Tiggy Wiggy in the ‘Fred Darling’ means that we have no idea whether she stays and what tactics will be used so it is easy to bypass her. Presumably Redstart will be allowed to bowl along and she accounted for Jellicle Ball, who ought to improve for the experience but will it be enough to overhaul her rival? Local Time comes here unbeaten after a campaign in Meydan and is difficult to assess on turf. The Nell Gywn winner Osaila has race fitness on her side and the extra furlong should be okay so she gets the nod over Godolphin acquisition Lucida, who accounted for Fadhayyil when they last met.
The Pretty Polly Stakes threw up last year’s Oaks winner and John Gosden runs Jazzi Top, a daughter of smart Zee Zee Top, who could be better than her bare form to date. Dermot Weld’s maiden winner Zannda must be well regarded to be venturing here. The standout form in the race belongs to Godolphin’s filly, Winters Moon, third in the Fillies’ Mile and trained by Saeed bin Suroor, whose last run should have put her right for today.
I do not back first-time-in-a-handicap maiden race winners, so Global Force should go well in the getting out stakes but I do not think it will be a decent price.
