Now before we debate on this i really don't want Modric to go but after todays croatian interview i'm now begining to despise the little fella and feel he will kick up a "berbatovesque" fuss sooner or later. Don't get me wrong we SHOULD NOT sell to Chavski or any prem rival at all costs but we should now be calling up the top european clubs and offering Modric to them and see how much we can get from these clubs. Barcelona are looking for a central midfielder and Modric would perfectly for them. I would much rather get less money for Modric to move abroad than more money for Modric to go Chelsea..... sickens me to think of him playing for Chelsea.

Anyway, i won't go into his comments because the little rats boring me to death now with this disrespectful attitude towards our club and fans but what i will say is can VDV take on the Modric role as an attacking midfielder alongside Sandro? I don't see why not. He does a similar role for Holland and is a class player. The only negative is he's not as fit as Modric and he dosen't have the engine drive that Modric has but he certainly scores much more goals and creates more chances than Modric so he could be a perfect fit. It would also give us the old option of 2 upfront ( which we played opur best football) meaning with the Modric money we could go all out and try and buy 2 top class strikers. Don't get me wrong i would still buy a player to replace Modric but wouldn't spend over the odds on someone. Get a replacement in with potential who wouldn't cost to much but play VDV in modrics old position. I'm all against selling Modric and always have been but i'm begining to think it's our only option but i repeat again..... DON'T sell to chelsea or any prem rival at all costs. It's either abroad for Modric or rot on the sub bench. Thoughts on VDV filling that role and getting in 2 top strikers with the possible Modric money?

but, as was said on another thread, at the moment we stand the best chance of getting a good deal because all and sundry think we're not a cash rich club. Sell Modric, and every player we go for will suddenly have an increased price tag, and none of them will want to play for Spurs, we'll just be the stepping stone to a bigger club.

at the minute, we are royally ****ed, because the lynchpin of our team doesn't have faith in us, and we can't bring in any of the players, let alone the two strikers we need, to get anywhere near CL football next season because EVERYONE knows it.

if we end up higher than sixth next season I'll buy a hat then eat it.

I think you've already said it, Don. He doesn't have the drive, the energy, or IMO, the sort of game to keep it simple, like Modric does.

Ok guys, few of you don't agree then but what would you do? Go all out and buy top class replacement? I would rather use Modric money to buy 2 top class strikers and revert back to 4-4-2

Change the way we play? The sort of money we are being offered for Modric won't buy a replacement so we have to think about using what we have and getting the best possible out of them.

Centrally it looks like we'll end up starting the season with Hudd and Sandro in the middle of the park, so we HAVE to keep hold of lennon and bale, let hudd ping balls to the wing and sandro sweep up behind him. Cross the ball better and rely on Pav/Crouch to either knock them in or knock them down for VDV.

VDV is a great player, but as mentioned he's not got the stamina or longevity that Modric has. Also, I think Modric is one of the best at picking out a pass, probably only Fabregas surpasses him in that dept. Both our clubs may be without our talismanic players soon <cry>

Don, you have changed your tune, it was only a few weeks back you was throwing a hissy fit telling me Modric is staying and he is nothing like Berbatov and that you love the player.

In my view, if, and when, Modric is sold, it will bring in more than enough money for a replacement. He has 6 yrs left on his contract, and you can bet that if he goes, then Levy will screw the buyer for every last penny.

I personally think we should just put Kranjcar (Sp?) in his position and spend the cash on a decent striker(s). But I'm not a premier league manager :D

Plus Harry seems to not like Niko.

The worrying part in all of this is Moddy's claim that Levy threatened to put him on the bench or keep him in the reserves. If that's true, then Levy must have been angered by what Moddy was telling him. In other words, it very much sounds like Moddy told Levy he wants to go, and tried to call on the "gentleman's agreement" he thinks he had with him; and when Levy put him right on the matter, Moddy got shirty.

Ray Wilkins probably heard all of this from Moddy's agent, which is why he's been crowing about us not trying to hold him against his will.

I can't see how this is going to end any other way than us selling the player to the Chavs for a knock-down price.

My only comfort is knowing that he's probably not as good as other options they have, and that in being forced to let Moddy go, we'll probably replace him with someone who will score us goals, as well as control play.

Let's be honest, as good as Moddy is, he's no Gazza.

Peskie, you will suffer more for losing Fabregas than we will losing Moddy.

Also, I think Nasri is going to go to City, to join his old pal, Clichy.

Oh, and you know how all you Gooners reckon that Clichy is utter crap? Well, I was reading some stats somewhere that showed that Clichy was the best LB in the PL, last season, based on tackles made and passes completed <ok>

but the thing is we dont need another 30 mil to buy 2 top class strickers

Levys probaly got around 30 mil for us to use, and selling kranjcar, palacios, jenas, ohara etc. can get us another 50 mil approx.

thats 80 mil, and we could easily buy 2 top class strikers with that, even if we payed over the odds

We dont need to sell Modric!!!!!! We dont need more money!!!!!!!

I've said in the past that I'd like to see van der Vaart play in that role, as he pretty much does it anyway.
He doesn't stay far up the pitch to support a lone striker, most of the time.

Either stick Kranjcar into the role that the Dutchman currently fills or bring in somebody like Marin or Diego.
Sort out our strike force and make a few more, minor adjustments and we'll be fine.

I have to disagree, WHL. IF Modric is sold to the Chavs, it certainly won't be on the cheap. Levy, I think is deadly serious. If he allows him to go to the Chavs, it will only be for top, top dollar.

We can't let him go to Chelsea now.
Levy would lose too much face and we'd be accepting truly blatant tapping up as a legitimate tactic.

Sell him to Real or one of the Milanese clubs and reporting Chelsea, again.
Nothing will happen to them, but it'll be yet another black mark against them and another example of the FA/PL ignoring obvious wrongdoing.

I always thought Hudd would be the natural replacement, not VDV.
I do think that VDV can play the role effectively, and would be a viable option if Hudd gets injured, but when everyone is fit I would go for:

    ----------Friedel---------
    Charlie--Daws--King--BAE
    ----------Sandro--------
    Lennon-----Hudd-----Bale
    -----------VDV----------
    -------New Striker-------

When you play a diamond formation, the two outside mids need to stay narrow, which neither Bale nor Lennon are going to do. With those two playing it has to be a flat four at least, and TBH I'd rather not play both of them anyway.
