sorry about the title of this thread, but i have been a liverpool fan now for over 30 years and i have a question for you all. I have seen the highs and lows of liverpool football club now for over 30 plus years,i have seen the good and the bad,but what i want to no is do you think kenny is getting a squard that is gonna challenge man utds dominance over the last 20 years, and also do you think we can challenge the likes of arsenal, chelsea, man city, spurs, and the villa to challenge for a top 4 place this season? I am sure like you and want liverpool to be a force again but i am worried with all this money the other clubs seem to be spending that we are gonna be left behind
yea but are we spending on the right players?i no they are english and all that but you hear of players like mata and augero being available, and what about david villa?i would love to have him at the pool.
Slightly worried that the other top 4 might outspend us, but I think Kenny will bring in at least another 2 players during this window, and that would take us to nearly £50m. I'm sure if we don't spend enough this season, it will become apparent next season and we'll just spend more next summer.
yea ze the owners have said we might not beable to keep anfield and rebuild the ground and we might have to build a new stadium.so where do we go on from there?
Getting pool back into title challengers is not as easy as some make it out to be. I mean, what you're after is a spell at the top like we are enjoying now, not just a one off title. I can't see this happening any sooner than 6-7 years time. I can see you winning the league beforehand, but creating a domestic dominance as united have over the past few years takes time and money. Especially if these ffp rules stop teams spending vast amounts at once.
it would be good to have a team that can challenge for the title, but i am not sure at the mo.what i really want is a team that can challange for a champs league place.
Even that's harder than it used to be, with ****ty more or less cemented in the top 4 and spurs fighting there aswell, the old big four has expanded to the big 6. And there aren't enough CL spots to go around
i think if arsene dosent spend any money this term i really think he will fall flat on his face,i think spurs were a 1 season wonder, and it will be interesting to see how chelsea get on with there new manager even though i think they will be there or there abouts
Well its very difficult to tell what is going to happen next season as there are far more variables than usual. They one question I have a certain answer to is: Are Liverpool going to start this season as a stronger unit than they were last season?
It seems quite clear from your post that you certainly haven't been a LFC fan for 'over 30 years', otherwise you would have known that Liverpool teams of the past were built on players who had a team ethic coupled with one or two players who had that spark of brilliance. I also think you need to realise that FSG are building for the long-term i.e. the club will come to fruition in the second half of the next decade at the least. There is no quick fix to eradicate the problems incurred over the last 20 years. First and foremost, there is the need for an improved stadium to generate match day incomes on par with the Madrids and Uniteds of this world (in order to spend greater amounts on transfer fees). Secondly, the club is not in this seasons champions league. Therefore, players like Mata, Aguero et al, although may be available will not be willing to come to Liverpool unless the bank is broken for their wages and even then, City, Chelsea, United and the Spanish giants will be able to better those wages. Finally, I think with the addition of two or three more good players, we will have a squad capable of challenging for a top 4 spot.
I believe that kenny has made it clear that he is building for the long term. That started last season when he got the present squad back to playing pass and move and the players unaminously stating that they enjoy training again. I also think that he is demonstrating that he will not buy stars. He will buy good players who can become stars. If the Liverpool Way means anything that philosophy is at the heart of it. Even as far back as Tony Hately we can see that when we have ignored that philosophy we have fallen on our faces. This coming season our prime objective must be to finish in the top 4. Firstly because that will signify that we have improved. Secondly because we cannot win the Premiership should the opportunity arise if we are not in the top 4. I do not rule out the possibility of winning the Premiership. We must continue to demonstrate the strength of our belief in the way we play. After that, and only after that, can we go on to dominate. To that degree, I agree with Jezz511. Where I disagree is his projection of the time frame required.
I think far too much emphasis is put on "big money signings". While this is one way of going for success it's not the only one. And, as has been pointed out, we're not a big enough attraction to top foreign players at the moment without European football. The way forward is to go for the top 4, get ourselves back in the CL and see where we go from there. I've been watching Liverpool since we came up from the second division so I think I've more or less seen it all. Yes, I'm impatient to get back to the glory days but I don't think throwing money at the wrong players is the answer.
My honest opinion on you guys is that your squad isn't good enough to challenge us, City or Chelsea. Whether or not you make the top 4 will depend on how well Arsenal fare (especially if they lose Fabregas and Nasri). They are the only ones close enough to you, but i reckon that you'll finish 5th this season.
You also have to factor in that we sold Torres and bought Carroll and Suarez which improved the squad. I actually like both the Adam and Henderson transfers. CM & RW in my opinion if we add a LW to that we have improved in the right areas. Our squad is already much improved with the 4 players mentioned and if we add 1 or 2 more which I expect us to do then I don't think we need to worry and hope we will challenge for the league next season.
Whilst the signings of Adam and Henderson may seem 'uninspiring' as they are not the big name signings, I believe they will add more quality to the squad and in positions that require strengthening. Finally, we have a deep lying playmaker who can control the game and dictate the tempo. With Henderson, we have another verison of Kuyt, hardworking, good ethic and can put in good crosses. I'll be happy if we get Downing or Mata as it will give us another attacking element. Lack of creativity has been our problem for a while. The likes of Meireles, Maxi, Kuyt, Lucas are good when the team clicks but when we struggle to break teams, we have no spark, no one to create something out of nothing (apart from Suarez). In addition, Aquilani will return and he will provide us with more incision when attacking in the final third. Quick thinking, quick feet and great technique. Our midfield is looking stronger and stronger and I believe we are more than capable of challenging for a top 4 spot. Our form in the second half of the season shows that we are good enough to win and play good football.
"and what about david villa?i would love to have him at the pool" Oh yeah great idea, lets bring in a 29 year old striker for £45m, pay him £150k a week and sell him in 2 years for £8m when he doesn't live up to the hype because this was his retirement package. This is not the way to get to the top, and people need to start understanding that we are building for the future and we are not just going to buy a few players and win the title next year.
You are not going to 'build for the future' outside of the Champions League places should the Financial Fair Play Rules be enforced they will only serve to widen the gap between the haves and have nots. If you get £20M from the Champions League, you can spend it. If you don't get the Champions League £'s, you can't. And if you spend what you haven't got, UEFA won't let you play anyway. LFC need to get into the Top4 next season otherwise the gap in terms of quality of Squad Vs the current Top4, which is considerable, will only get bigger.
