As long as he's behind McCormack when the ball is squared to him then he's onside, surely he'd have known that?
Even so, all he has to do is check his run and let Ross get ahead of him. I thought the same as FulhamIreland when I first saw it.
Could he have been called up for coming back from an offside position? No idea why I'm trying to defend him ... !!
Don't think so. You often see strikers who play on the shoulder of the last man make a run in behind, the pass doesn't get played and then they check back onside and then get the ball with no offside be given. This would be the same.
I think this result still shows the gulf in quality between us and teams like Middlesborough, Watford etc. Even with 10 men they bossed the second half. On a lighter note, I thought the pitch looked terrific on Saturday!
That illustrates my point about the two up top with the diamond or flat 3 and one AM behind. Watford play the one striker in that system. To play two strikers unbalances the team – combine that with Ruiz sitting in the hole and the team looks short in defence. If there are two strikers up front then it should be 4-4-2, there can be variation in whether both CM’s are holding or if one is going forward. The teams that have played a diamond to good effect had exceptional players to build it on – Chelsea with Essien and two flying wing backs, Milan with Gattuso, Cafu & Maldini. We don’t have that midfielder and our full backs haven’t been getting forward enough – I’d be interested to know how many assists we’ve got from the full backs this season. If you haven’t got the talent in those three positions then it is a particularly bad formation – it’s not one many teams go for– the 4-3-3 offers more width and defensive cover and it doesn't need the individual talent to the same extent. It was a strange game on the weekend – I was quite surprised by the starting line up. The more I watch Kavanagh the more I think he should be playing left back. He’s a solid enough player, a bit lightweight for the centre of the park given that he isn’t especially creative. At left back he can offer some discipline and solid defence. He can cross the ball so would be good on the overlap. Tunnicliffe didn’t have a good game generally, I’m not convinced by him at all although to his credit he did try take on some leadership with the absence of Scott in the middle. I was expecting Boro to win it 4-3 – the keeper coming forward was a strange decision and he paid for it, almost looked as though McC had lost the opportunity but managed to bundle through the defender on the half way line. Having said that the Boro keeper made the best save against Hugo I've ever seen live.
I thought it was brainless!!!!! He should have followed Ross and stayed right once he'd been overtaken, so that Ross could have used him to dummy instead of chancing everything versus the 'keeper. Remember the LVC goal running from our penalty area - and dummied to George Williams to take the 'keeper out - LVC/Williams/Hugo used their brains! COYW!!
McCormack cleared it up in his interview stating he was shouting at Tunnicliffe because he wanted him to get his first goal not because he was angry, he then stated Tuncliffe was screaming at him to go and get his hat trick, to be honest in a game that had nothing riding on it for us I don't see it as a bug issue
