Well I would agree if he was uniquely "ours". I don't care particularly where he was born or that he never came here but I think it is poor that he is shared with so many other nations and cities. We should celebrate something uniquely ours akin to Australia Day.
Ironically, Australia Day is a celebration of when the British arrived, it used to be called Invasion Day.
Only just seen your update.... Re Newton, it doesnt have to be his birthday. It could be another significant day in his life that we celebrate. he did formulate one of the most important theories the world has ever known.... And I have got a problem with Shakespeare. he never wrote any of his plays down hence what we see today is memories of his work regurgitated by actors of the plays themselves. Well what if they improved them or went as far as creating something that bore little resemblance to the original? I suppose the idea is that Shakespeare the name collectively embodies something still brilliantly produced in England and exported the world over.
Nope, I did history at A level and have always been interested in British history. I didn't know the BBC had a Great Britons list. Who is top of it? I'd guess Churchill considering his popularity. Shakespeare, even though it is disputed about the validity of his works, is a symbol of literature and writing the World over, I think he deserves something. Considering today is his birthday, I would prefer today to be Shakespeare Day than St George's.
I'll believe you. Sir Winston Churchill Isambard Kingdom Brunel Diana, Princess of Wales Charles Darwin William Shakespeare Sir Isaac Newton Elizabeth I John Lennon Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson Oliver Cromwell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100_Greatest_Britons#Entirety_of_the_list
It's impossible for him to have been born in Turkey, and his origins are subject of debate rather than fact. (nerd mode off)
Get In!!! Go for me. I'd be great. We could all eat dogs and bugger about with unseaworthy boats for the day. It'd be a great laugh. I want mythologizing mind. A fire breathing seal could be a good story. Or a kamikaze albatross. Just so long as I come out the hero.
