I'm surprised a mod has started a thread with such potential to get hijacked and turned into a political free for all.
Not fire breathing ones for ****s' sake. Anything currently alive that is called a 'dragon' is a lizard.
I'm sure we say this every year but we really shouldn't have a patron saint that we share with ****loads of other countries and cities who has literally nothing to do with England. But it isn't going to change now so instead make Trafalgar Day or another such occasion a Bank Holiday. Any excuse to celebrate beating the French the way the Septics celebrate beating us.
It obviously didn't breathe fire, it was probably something like a Draco Volans that was terrorising a village.
We should have multiple. Trafalgar, Waterloo, El Alamein, Rourke's Drift, Blenheim, Naseby, Normandy, Goose Green... the list goes on. Trafalgar and Waterloo certainly should.
Well having them all warcentric seems a bit off. It would suggest we've never been good at anything but a good ruck. Maybe Newton or Darwin's birthdays or something related to Shakespeare, but then again the latter is as thorny a nest as St George....
Of course, I was just suggesting various military ones that could be chosen. Newton was born on Christmas Day, so that one is kinda out of the question. Darwin is a good one. Brunel, Churchill, Shakespeare, Dickens, Nelson, Cook, Elizabeth I, Fleming or Shackleton would all be other great alternatives.
It's about celebrating being English, the fact that St George was a Roman soldier born in Turkey is completely irrelevant(like us fans).
