    Totally disagree with this thread.

Where was the the thread last season about "this team is so full of mediocrity except for Suarez"

    <doh>

While we don't have a team of world beaters, and had a disasterous summer to boot and poor form, ageing players, dead weight players, and our best stiker injured all season, we are still 5th with a game in hand.

    Food for thought.

With Gerrard deffo leaving, and Johnson most likely to - that's another £250k a week saved in wages.

Since when does an average right back get paid close to Gerard's wages

No it was said Johnson and reins were on 100k, after and settle on 70k. Carragher on 90k

Please note that there are all from an era of regular Cl and before big TV money

The average prem wage is now 45k by the by so when average players get that it puts our wage structure in perspective

The new TV deal is going to just make it even higher

We can't go thinking players are liabilities due to wage. Performers should get paid. Johnsons problem is he's no longer performing

Same for toure who Rodgers asked to stay who's up there... Liability at the back and on the balance sheet

    Blood. Boiling !!!
    -----------------------------

Yep, Johnson is over £100k a week - I think Gez is more accurate with £120k. Which is criminal and shows you just how much we spent during the days of consistent CL qualification.

The owners/manager have done a good job in reducing this over the years. I believe under Rafa, we were operating at over 70% of wages to revenue. Now we're at 50-60% which are far more sustainable.

If you look at the fact that in 2 seasons we've lost Gerrard (age) and Suarez, that's a big hole to fill. IMO we have the squad it is a young one that will improve we just need to fill the void left by those 2. I'd also like a CB personally but I imagone that will be debatable whereas the majority would agree we need CM and a striker.

We're only just now getting over Rafa's mistakes and some people want him back to make more

"We were thinking about bringing in players with quality - that's the first thing," added Benitez.
"He is also English and that is important for the Champions League list. We were thinking about improving the team and Johnson is a very good player who will do that."
Johnson's arrival could now signal the departure of Spanish right-back Alvaro Arbeloa, with Real Madrid being linked with an £8m bid for the 26-year-old.
"Arbeloa was a good player for us last year. He is our player but if there is a good offer we have to consider it."

    And Carra just before that

Like Moyes, Brendan was given a squad in need of overhaul after long periods of neglect

Unlike Moyes, Brendan moved forward, and unlike Van Gaal he's done it while reducing the wage bill
