Used to go in regularly in the punk / football heyday Great memories I gave Beki Bondage of Vice Squad one in there.............sadly the "one" in question was only a light, but nice to give it a go! I was also in there with Guvnor when we were regular enough to get asked by the barman if we thought other drinkers were old enough, answer being "it's difficult to tell nowadays".......... We were both 15 at the time!
Most of these older buildings that have or will be lost to the city of Hull have just been left too long from originally being empty to be economically repaired. Lord Line, Ranks Flour Mill, Edwin Davis's, the old Co-Op/Skyline/Baileys building have or are going the same way. We had docks that went the same way yet if you see what Liverpool did to their docks you would see what could be done on any brick structured building. The legalities of ownership and the such is beyond my understanding but if the council can now knock down 'Jacks' why couldn't it do something to get it restored many years ago?
I don't know the right answer, and I agree, it's a shame when we lose old buildings. I do find it interesting that when a privately owned building is allowed to decay by private owners, it's the Council that's expected to buy it and pay for its restoration. I'd have thought if that was cost effective, the owners or business folk would have done it and the problem wouldn't exist. Isn't the issue private neglect or greed rather than Council ineptitude?
I agree with that, it's all too easy to blame the Council when in fact in most cases it's not their building. I guess there must be a compulsory purchase option, but then the rate payers will complain. Not easy being a Council.
A chunk of one of the buildings just a few yards from the New York fell off the other week. Drove by coincidentally later on, if you'd been under it, you'd have a very flat head.
They've had to move the bus stop from outside new York further up the road to avoid masonry falling on bus ****ers heads
That's a real shame. Losing more great architecture to demolition. Surely buildings like this should have a preservation order?
It seems the council are going to take over the demolition and charge back the owner, as they've found it's full of asbestos... http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Demo...otel-delayed/story-26368338-detail/story.html
Not every nice building is a listed building, this particular building was worth saving, it would have made a brilliant boutique hotel, but it was left too long before any enforcement action was taken and is now beyond repair. As GLP says, it's a real shame.

This is what happens when you leave buildings derelict for years. This and the George lamb memorial church seem a bit dodge though.
