I agree with Gonads. No matter how bad things have been for Sunderland this last fifty-odd years, it has never once stopped us laughing at that 1 - 9 at their place back in 1908. Those occasions stand alone.

It's like I always tell them. So long as it's a record, it's relevant.

Newcastle city council have confirmed the attendance 'through the gates' as 30,075, so a great effort to be fair.

Officially, by the way, season ticket seats left empty are not meant to be classed as 'attendees'.

Pretty impressive to have 40% of the ground empty if that figure is correct. I will admit that when they were quoting 47,000ish on the day it was farcical, there's no way the ground was 90%+ full. I would have guessed 35-40,000. I do recall the fact that the "boycoutt" was prior to a home game against Hull which we consequently lost 1-0, no-one was too worried about it at the time as relegation seemed rather unlikely and people were too busy making a rukus.

Flash forward 7 months and we got relegated by goal difference on the same points as... Hull. There is a small voice at the back of my head wondering if 35 points ends up not being enough and we've shot our load a bit early with this stuff, near the end of the Tottenham game there wasn't a great "rally the troops" crowd in the ground. If we lose to Swansea we could be in trouble.

Won't that mean they have to pay bigger match ticket sales to the away clubs unnecessarily?

I think you'll be fine on 35 points, just. Looking like 33 maybe 34 will go down <ok>
