http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-32372223 An interviewer asked John Lennon "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" to which John replied "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in The Beatles".
It's a myth, Lennon never actually said it, it was a joke a comedian made on TV three years after Lennon's death.
Topical perhaps ? John Lennon reads “The General Erection” from his second book of collected (nonsense) writing A Spaniard in the Works: Azure orl gnome, Harrassed Wilsod won the General Erection with a very small marjorie over the Totchies. Thus pudding the Labouring Partly into powell after a large abcess. This he could not have done withoutspan the barking of thee Trade Onions, heady by Frenk Cunnings (who noun has a SAFE SEAT in Nuneating thank you and Fronk (only 62) Bowells hasn’t.) This is Lennon’s version of the 1964 UK General Election, when Harold Wilson became Prime Minister with a very small…. you get the picture. You're right. Just checked it with Google - The line often attributed to John Lennon - "Ringo isn't the best drummer in the world. He isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles" - was actually uttered by British comedian Jasper Carrott in 1983.
I'd guess Ringo was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time because even he would probably admit to not being the best drummer in the world. He does seem to have lasted the pace though, and he's still alive... But does anyone know how he managed to get a gig on the Band's Last Waltz concert???
The BBC did a series on the different component parts of a band a few years back. On the one about drummers loads of drummers far more respected than Ringo said he was very underrated and people didn't understand what a great pulse he gave to the Beatles.
Thankfully we aren't into Hall of Fame's in this country. If someone was good at something people can acknowledge that without having it rubber stamped by someone with some trumped up authority.
Great documentary it was - called "I'm in a Rock & Roll Band". Here's the episode on guitarists... I can't find the one on drummers, (not v good at cataloguing all the **** I have - somewhere in my collection ?),but here's someones opinion of the best 10...not sure I agree with the order( I'd put Ginger Baker at # 1, Bonham at #2, Ainsley Dunbar # 3 with Neil Peart @ #4. The bit on Bonham from the documentary:
so somebody compiled a Top ten Drummers - drum solos are **** why isnt the Amen break creator Coleman even mentioned in this list ?
