Derby boss Steve McClaren revealed he wants to keep Tom Ince at the club next season after the winger’s double sealed a 4-4 draw at Huddersfield. Ince, on loan from Hull City, scored the first and last in an eight-goal thriller which saw Derby twice come from behind to seal a precious point in the race for a SkyBet Championship play-off place. McClaren said: “If we hadn’t got Tom Ince and others in January we wouldn’t be in the top six. He has scored goals and created them and he is my type of player. “I think he’s been good for us and we’ve been good for him. I haven’t spoken to Steve Bruce but we would like to keep him.” Ince put the visitors ahead in the 16th minute with a 25-yard cracker before three goals in seven minutes at the end of the first half put Huddersfield in control. Oscar Gobern shrugged off a suspicion of handball to smash home his first goal in over three years in the 38th minute before left-back Reece James, on loan from Manchester United, produced the perfect corner for skipper Mark Hudson to head home at the back post. In stoppage time James, a threat from corners throughout the game, made it 3-1 straight from the flag kick after keeper Lee Grant came for it and missed. Nahki Wells saw a chance to make it 4-1 smash against the face of Grant and Derby took advantage as goals from substitute Simon Dawkins and Jesse Lingard made it 3-3 just after the hour. Huddersfield went back in front at 4-3 when Wells looped a shot high into the net but Ince grabbed a point 10 minutes from time. Town also had the ball in the net twice but the efforts were ruled out for offside. McClaren was left tearing his hair out at his side’s defending and said: “It was a crazy game. “We started well, got the goal and looked in control but three goals in seven minutes cost us. “We had to win the second half and we showed unbelievable character and fight to stay in the game but we are not going to get anywhere this season if we keep conceding goals like we have been doing. “We are crawling over the line and we don’t make it easy for ourselves. For the neutrals it was great, for the managers it was a nightmare and for the fans it had ups and downs. “We need one more win and that’s our only focus but the way we are defending at the moment anyone could beat us. We are not in a good condition but we are scrapping.” http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/spor...-tigers-star-ince-on-permanent-deal-1-7217207
Which highlights what? The gulf between the top of the Championship and the lower reaches of the PL, or that one manager can get a performance out of a player whereas the other can't? Would David Meyler or Jake Livermore look like a world beater in the current Derby side?
Ince did nothing at Forest and is a world beater at Derby. Says more about the manager than the league I suspect.
So would we be looking to try and squeeze a profit out of them? Especially if they come up, selling him for 5m would be easy enough I would think.
Can't understand why we signed him, if the worst come's to the worst and we go down, is he going to be happy coming back to city, Derby still have a chance of the play off's but if they don't make it up, we'd be selling a player to a promotion rival ,(now were I've I heard that before, Boyd ) Just think he was a panic buy after we lost Snodgrass, plus to be fair to him he's not had that many chances under SB. Plus the two year contract was strange in effect he,s more or less a free agent from 1st January 2016.
We shouldn't have loaned him out in the first place He should very much be a part of our plans next season (whatever the division) but I bet we end up selling for a couple of million and he'll go on to bigger and better things like so many of our past players
Does my head in that we lack this kind of player so badly yet we've got one who's obviously a blood good player but Bruce hasn't got the balls to use him.
Yet we chased so hard to get him, would love to know, what has gone on behind closed door's, some of SB dealing with player's although I support him, leave me scratching me head.
Like.. who? Can't think of a single player who is playing better than when they were here except George Boyd.
The longer he's gone, the better he gets... He's made 16 appearances for us and was poor in roughly 16 of them, he looks far too lightweight for the Premier League. He's obviously got some talent and if he can learn to battle a bit he could be a decent player, but so far he's only looked decent in the Championship.
What superstars. Walters was with us several years before heading to Stoke and was **** while with us, **** after leaving us, and only made the break through several years later.
TBF to Walters his daughter was seriously ill wile at City and left to be closer to his family in Liverpool.
Walters wasn't **** while with us, he didn't score enough goals but he was a decent player, I was sorry when he left.
Those players haven't been at the club in 7-8 years if not more. Hardly a stinging riposte to my point.
Ince has played in the league for us 7 times this season - most of these as a sub. I don't think he's got a fair chance to be honest. Even HBA got more of a chance and he really was **** (and a negative influence in the dressing room)
I don't think Boyd is playing better for Burnley,i think he just gets more games to impress. Obviously we should have kept both Ince and Boyd. Bruce has made plenty mistakes this season, these were two of them and another was realising far too late,McGregor isn't Premier league quality.
