The trouble is OFH is that people want to hear that it is possible to keep spending and spending without any consequence. The problem is that a sizeable minority know absolutely nothing or very little about politics or finance. When Hollande (substitute him for Ed Balls/ Millipede in the UK) told the electorate that there was an alternative to austerity they believed him. It took about 3 days for him to change his mind but France was stuck with him for 5 years.

The UK should have used more austerity over the last 5 years similar to the Irish.

The democratic system would be better if potential voters had an intelligence test before given the right to vote.
Not sure you would qualify yet.

I refer you to the 2nd post from earlier. And the first one again too, because you don't seem to get the point.

There's absolutely no point in debating anything with you. I'm not going to say what I want to because this forum is a polite place.

But then it wouldn't be democratic - but I suppose that would suit the tories, who play lip service to it anyway.

It's a pity you cannot discuss politics sensibly. Is it a trait of the left?

Back in the 1920s you could actually vote for a coalition candidate. There had been a successful coalition government and people thought that by trying to keep that going would be a good thing. The candidates who stood were not elected, yet the likelihood is that there will be no party able on their own to form a government, so there will be a coalition that no one has had the chance to vote for.

No more than taking snide pot shots at people with whom you disagree is a trait of the right.

OFH - I had not realised until today that if there is no majority Govt the old Govt is reinstalled until a coalition can be formed. That could take a while!

I have a Dutch neighbour who is used to coalition governments. They had a period of months while the different parties tried to get agreements and benefits by supporting each other. The people who had voted got nothing like they hoped for, which suggests that your voting system is better until things get as complicated as they seem to be now. For what are no more than fringe parties to wield too much power seems wrong to me, but it could happen. From what I see however when small parties get into power sharing they get above themselves and think they can dictate policy. That has happened here when the Greens didn't get what they wanted from the socialists, so have stopped supporting the government and gone off in a huff.
