    English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisiandialects and was brought to Britain by Germanic invaders or settlers from what is now called north west Germany and the Netherlands. It uses a vocabulary unlike other European languages of the same era. A large portion of the modern English vocabulary came from the Anglo-Norman languages. English frequently makes use of loanwords originating from other languages.

    Celts got beat up a lot by Germanic people throughout history. The Franks beat the Gauls, the Anglo-Saxons beat the Britons (Welsh) and the Vikings gave the Irish and Scots a good hiding, but they gave everyone a hiding, even the English.

    Michael Wood's In Search of the Dark Ages would be a good starting point for those of you wishing to learn the facts regarding the forging of our great nations.

    The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, as wonderful as they are, will offer a rather biased view of England's creation; however, one must never discount the contemporaneous accounts post 9th century, which do tend to correlate with modern historiography.

    I am a Jute. My ancestors were Jutes. Wessex is my Kingdom. Alfred is King.

    Britain is for the Welsh and mainland Gaelic tribes. It offers nothing to me.
