Shocking that the stadium emptied after the third and fourth goals by Palace, they didn't even stay for their goal. Guess they are fans and not supporters!

Same would happen at our place jager. I often wonder where this crowd was when I was watching us play Torquay on a rainy evening down the Vetch. I'll still be watching my team if we drop down but many of our fans won't imo.

Questions like that always get me, the reason why fans didn't show up on games are a few.

    1) the vetch was shiite ( even though I loved it)
    2) hardly any families came
    3) the football was shiite
    4) the league was shiite

The fact is success and moving stadiums mean that we have progressed so much.

In regards to Sunderland today, they are fighting to stay up , these fans left after about 55 minutes, so what does that do the morale of the players? Anything could happen over 35 minutes.

Yes this League is better but there's one reason with two words why we get bigger crowds:

Glory hunters. They'd be like rats off a sinking ship if the unthinkable happened.

Mal Pope is one example. I knew him many years ago when we were in the bottom tier and the guy used to laugh at me going to the Swans all the time. He never once expressed any interest in our team. Now he's 'Mr Swans' and is feted by the Club. Makes me sick to be honest.

Thing is mate glory hunters or plastics if you like, but progression is all about that. In the vetch we were getting 5k-7k fans a game, when we moved to the Liberty it was 12k-14k fans a game, are those plastics? In the premier league we get over 20k a game.

So decide yourself which are the superior fans, but it's been ten years we've been in the liberty, a lot of that crowd are now a lot older, and there are a hell of lot of teenagers and kids at our games, they never went to the vetch.

So you are calling kids and teens glory hunters, they would probably think you are an old fuddy duddy

<laugh> No doubt. It's not who are the more 'superior' fans. I don't mean that at all. I'm simply saying that imo many of our current fans will disappear if things turn for the worst. We weren't filling the ground in the Championship were we?

Every club has those type of fans. You reach the Prem and all of a sudden everyone has been a 'longtime fan'. Bollocks.

I'm chuffed we are getting the crowds after years of struggling and no fan is better than anyone else but like every other club we have plenty who will disappear if we go down or (like Sunderland) are losing 0-4.

Yes fans will disappear on relegation, as I said about 12k-14k was the average in the championship. And when we lost 5 nil to Chelsea in January I didn't see the stadium emptying in the manner of Sunderland today. They left the stadium half full

You need platics and glory hunters these days, and we should be hoping for a more the merrier approach. We would not have turned a profit last season without them so I don't know why this subject has to be discussed yet again.

They'd have been too young or not born while at the Vetch and are vital to the club as they are the next generation of the Jack Army <cheers>

I like how he has a go at other fans, but starts by saying he missed the first goal as he wanted to finish his pint <laugh>

I've missed goals to finish a pint or go for a piss lol, but there is no way I would leave the ground until the game is over, I pay a lot for my tickets

Project & jager both missing my point. Sorry we're discussing it Project - didn't realise I shouldn't.

I agree that the Club needs as many fans as possible. I agree that it doesn't matter if they're glory hunters or fly-by-nights. I agree that it's better than the windswept days down the Vetch with 2,000 or less of us watching. All agreed, OK?

However, the point being made was that lots of Sunderland fans walked out, implying that they're not real fans. My point is that we have plenty like that too. How many in that pic would be in those seats if we ever arrived in Div 1? Half? Less than half? My guess is about a third, maybe less.

All clubs have a hard core of supporters who would follow their club in the Blue Square. I'm one of those and I'm sure there's plenty here on this forum. No, it doesn't make me better than anyone else but the point I'm making is that you're deluded if you think we haven't got any glory hunters who would walk out if things started to go downhill - we've got plenty.

But Sunderland haven't really gone downhill have they? They still play in the premier league, and imo won't go down as the ones in the bottom three now will go.

Leaving because your team are losing doesn't give the impression that these people really want to support their team through thick and thin. Sunderland scored giving them hope, they could have scored even more, I've seen it happen before.

Most of their fans think relegation is overdue. Check their board.

I suspect the Sunderland fans leaving is more a protest at the club owners than any thing else.

I saw many fans storm out of the liberty during laudcraps days and said so at the time.......If monk was to ever get as bad the same thing would happen to him. When fans walk out it sends a powerful message to the club that they are not happy.....
