It cost me nothing so stop trying to make me lose the extra £3k I got on its initial value.

It's easier to built a squad when you can spend £30m each season without having to finance those deals by selling other players... everyone knows that.

A better anology would be you need to decorate your house but only hav 2k which wont do it. You do however have a car worth £3k which if you sold you could do afford to decorate the house... problem is, if you sell the car you then don't have means of transport to get to your job to earn even more money to keep renovating your house.

Correct, either way the cost is the same so all the net/gross bullshit means you have sold one thing to finance another <ok>

No, but the point you're missing is that if you sell X amount of talent you still have to replace it. With a car its just old car to new car. With a team you could sell 3 strikers to fund the purchase of 1, the quality of that striker might be better but then you don't have a squad, which is where net spend comes into it, you can buy a striker without having to worry about selling e.g. City & Bony, Man Utd & Falcao.

I mean if Barca sold Suarez, Messi & Neymar for £500m and bought Rooney, Sterling & Walcott for £300m and they played **** you'd have to acknowledge that they spent -£200m net, nobody would say "but the managers spent £300m and they've gone backwards, shocking!!" That was the situation Benitez faced at Liverpool where he had to sell good players to buy new ones. I'm sure he'd have loved to keep Alonso, Bellamy, Crouch etc. but because of his budget he couldn't do so and had to try and sell to buy. He made some bad transfers, but I'd say at any club only about 10-30% of transfers are actually successful so when you've got a limited budget and rely on every signing coming in and hitting the ground running you're going to struggle to keep challenging at the top.

That's exactly right! It is why I always say Rafa was playing fantasy premier league; you have a tight budget and in order to have class players within the budget you are working to you must have pretty average players. In order to spend 30M on a player, you have to get rid of one of your better 15M players, and perhaps another of your average players for 7M and the rest is made up of the 8M annual budget!!! Anyone who has played fantasy league should understand the similarities that Rafa was working under, except Rafa was working in the real world with expectations, pressure, and of course not to mention doing this whilst being competitive in the Champs League and domestic cups!!! All done whilst your rivals like Chelsea and Utd are able to spend big and don't have to worry about selling first!

Spot on! And lets not forget that Rafa's average net spend per season is less than Martin O'neil (Villa), Pulis (Stoke), Ramos (Spurs), and his overall net spend over 5/6 season is the same as Di Matteo and Moyes spent in their one season at Chelsea and Man Utd respectively!!

He spent £250m gross and £105m net, to give that some context Wenger has spent £141m net in his 19 years at Arsenal, and old Harry Redknapp got Spurs into the CL places twice on a net spend of £7.5m. He had plenty of money to spend, to suggest he didn't is delsuional

  11. What if you bought that old car for £500?

Rafa was very good (particularly with RBs) and buying and selling at a profit.

    Depends where you get your info, from this site his net spend is about 69M;

    http://www.lfchistory.net/Transfers/ByManager/20-0

Harry did very well at Spurs, but what did he win? How many Champs League finals and semi finals did he get to? How many years did he qualify for the Champs League? And yes, Wenger has done an absolutely astonishing job. Rafa spent absolute peanuts even if you take your figure over 6 seasons, again he spent less than O'Neil, Ramos, Di Matteo, Roy Keane, Pulis, and a bunch of other managers on a net spend per season and achieved far greater. All you have done is highlighted how good Wenger is, and how fine a job Redknapp did, albeit with a Bale inspired Spurs, and to remain consistent I have acknowledged just how much Suarez did the same for us! None of that takes away the job Rafa did!

  13. Yep, let's use Arsene 'I refused to spend money for over a decade' Wenger for perspective <laugh>

Yep, let's use Arsene 'I've got my side into the CL every year of my career here' for some perfect perspective

I'm top of the fantasy league table... Does that mean I'm as good a manager as Rafa? :bandit:

It sure does! Hang tight for a few more weeks there may be a vacancy on the horizon, get your powerpoint skills and dossier up to scratch, and a few weeks under the tanning beds would not harm your chances!!

Thing is Saint, this type of blinkered thinking is what blights the budgetary plans of half, if not more, of our public services. How can you ****ing say there's no difference between total gross and net spends?

He finished above arsenal twice, below arsenal three times and once on level points (though 2 gd better so technically above arsenal). Overall he accumulated less premier league points than arsenal, during his time at Liverpool. He also finished outside the top four two years which arsenal didn't.

Rafa has a fantastic European record though!

Trophy wise he out performed arsenal though and that's the difference between the 2 clubs. We class success as winning trophies, arsenal count success as finishing top 4 with anything else a bonus.
