Careful what you say Warky! Thousands of residents in Sussex & Surrey...normal, thinking, caring families will oppose this scheme. Some of us place our natural environment, quality of all good things in life, way above money and commercial greed!, They value their green spaces, forests, the quieter rural rides that we are so lucky to have in Sussex. In my active resident/community-minded days, I found myself chairing a campaign group of thousands, who opposed Ranger Oil(Scottish!) exploiting our Sussex countryside and coast, near Chichester - crap plans, shocking public consultation......even claimed they had talked to the dead!! Of course that and many other issues that we Brits hold dear to our hearts in this very small island, played into our hands. We won and kicked the b..........stds out! I got a nice letter from their CEO offering my money to change tack!
" Is this not racist???? " About as racist as a lot of Scots refusing to be called " British " and referring to themselves as " Scottish " - however in England if we dare call ourselves English ............that's another story. Lovely how Scotland, part of the UK CHARGE English overseas fees for universities. I'm not pro-tory by any stretch, however, I'm ver anti Labour. Scotland is very pro Labour so the SNP's rise doesn't help Labour get into government which is fantastic news. The word " racist " gets branded all too often.............
Try as opposition groups will to this oil being extracted, but they won't have any say. If the discovery is true, it will happen, it's just a case of how it happens.
Since I've been an expat I always make sure people call me English and I'm very proud to be that. Americans always say British and I always correct them. I ask them what they call somebody from Scotland and they say Scottish, likewise with Welsh etc so I say to them that when they say British what they really mean is English, and that's what I am.
We should be allowed to celebrate our Englishness by having St George's day as a public Bank Holiday IMO.
Ever since I was 20 I have taken St George's day off and celebrated either with a few friends or sometimes on my own..........you don't need government permission to celebrate being English........................I did get thrown out of the Plough one tipsy St George's day......
From a post on the Telegraph's website:- "...and tomorrow an illiterate group of morons, comprising Greenpis and Fiends of the Earth and Anti-fracking numbskulls and the tree hugging knuckle dragging sub-monkey species called environmentalists and the bone idle Socialist Workers clowns will be almost frothing at the mouth in protest at the very thought of Britain proposing to develop its own oil and gas resources which are under our control and not that of some Quran waving radical Islamist jihadist." Made me chortle, did that! Of course, you could predict the global reaction if us wicked English started to make the exact same noises the butter-wouldn't-melt Scots have been making for the last couple of decades...
