Page I am not blowing Cameron's trumpet at all, I'm just trying to add a bit of balance, nothing more. I agree that the cuts you highlight are really hurting and we are feeling them where I live too (our library is only open because of volunteers like my wife).

It would be nice though if parties were honest about what they would cut as I really don't know who to vote for given that no party is committing to the area that I'm employed in (even though it might seem like I'm a Tory die hard). Whilst I like to know where a party stands, right or left, there doesn't seem to be anyone occupying the central ground which I feel is where I would like my vote to count.

Procurement in Defence is extremely poor due in part to decisions being made by one party and then reversed by another. Whatever the trident replacement is it certainly needs to be independent

Reading your posts on this thread I'm convinced you're proud to call yourself one of Thatcher's children

Very humble man. I sat next to him on the District Line Underground about 15 years ago, I was not convinced that he was the one. Then I picked
up the courage to ask him. He smiled and said "he was". If a man can give up automatic knighthood to prove a point he's great.:emoticon-0104-surpr:emoticon-0142-happy

Election 2015: Tories stand by Miliband Trident attack

Media caption Ed Miliband: "[The Conservatives] are offering a campaign based on deceit and lies"
The Conservatives are standing by an attack on Ed Miliband that Labour said had dragged politics "into the gutter".
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said Mr Miliband had "stabbed his own brother in the back" to lead Labour and was now "willing to stab the UK in the back" by doing a deal on Trident with the SNP "to become PM".
Mr Miliband said the defence secretary had demeaned himself and his office.
But Prime Minister David Cameron said Mr Fallon was "absolutely right".
    In other election news:
    • Labour pledged teenagers would be guaranteed face-to-face individual careers advice if the party is in government
    • SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said her party would only press for another independence referendum if something material changed
    • A Plaid Cymru candidate at the centre of a Nazi slur row admitted he has had a "baptism of fire"
    • UKIP admitted it was "lagging" behind with women voters and that the party sometimes resembles a "rugby club on tour"
"This is the day the election campaign got personal", said BBC deputy political editor James Landale.
"The Conservatives believe that focusing on Ed Miliband's character and a potential Labour-SNP deal will win them votes in England.
"But Labour reckon that playing politics with decisions taken about national defence will backfire and ultimately cost the Tories votes."

Media caption The BBC's Norman Smith challenged Michael Fallon on the personal nature of the attack
The Conservatives and Labour are both committed to replacing the ageing Trident system - Britain's continuous at-sea nuclear submarine force.
But the SNP - which has said it would work with Labour in order to keep the Conservatives out of government after the 7 May general election - opposes renewing Trident and calls the issue a "red line".
Mr Fallon suggested the nuclear weapons system could be at risk if Labour won and did a "grubby deal" with the SNP "to get into Downing Street" - something denied by Labour.

It's alright he told me the other day the only thing I care about is immigration (during a conversation about immigration). It seems when you discuss the current topic (raised by others) people decide it's the only opinion you have on anything <laugh>

  15. The only topic I've discussed with Cym is the bedroom tax. I'm guessing he see's it in the same light as Thatcher's poll tax (we'd be ****ed n here <whistle>). Of course, bedroom tax is misrepresented with that title, its not actually a tax, its a shortfall in rent being paid via a benefit claim.

On Immigration, I think that will be a major player in this election. All five parties of policies on it and all five seem to accept that the current situation isn't good enough and that we need to be stricter when it comes to border control. Only UKIP (obviously) are going full gang-ho on the issue though and that's were I think (not necessarily agree) they will gain a lot of votes.

It'd be interesting to see people have a go at a basic manifesto.. The key policies you would implement, projects you would encourage, your main things you'd change or do to try and sort out the country. As I'd imagine none of the parties have policies exactly matching how many of us think.

Might have a go at one later...

After a flurry of polls putting Labour in the lead, the Conservatives have edged ahead of their rivals.

Late on Thursday night new polls were issued which gave the Conservatives a one-point lead.

It followed three polls earlier in the day which each gave Labour leads of six, four and three points respectively.

The latest poll from YouGov placed the Conservatives on 35 per cent (+1), Labour on 34 per cent (-1), Ukip on 12 per cent (-1), the Lib Dems on eight per cent (no change) and the Greens on four per cent (-1).

If this poll is replicated on May 7, the Electoral Calculus seat projector predicts the following results – Labour would be 40 seats short of a majority:

Meanwhile, a ComRes/Mail phone poll also placed the Conservatives in the lead on 34 per cent (-2), Labour on 33 per cent (+1), the Lib Dems on 12 per cent (+3) and Ukip on 12 per cent (no change).

If this poll is replicated on May 7, the Electoral Calculus seat projector predicts the following results – Labour would be 41 seats short of a majority:

The projection takes into account the latest YouGov poll rating for the parties in Scotland, including the SNP, from April 9, which shows:
    • SNP 49% (+3)
    • Labour 25% (-4)
    • Conservative 18% (+2)
    • Liberal Democrats 4% (+1)
    Betting predictions
The opinion polls are not the only measure of who might be running the country after the General Election. The financial markets can also provide a valuable insight into the way voters perceive the parties. This is the latest prediction from Betfair based on the current bets being made by punters:

    Hung parliament 85%
    Conservative majority
    13%
    Labour majority
    2%

Don't forget that in order to win a majority, one of the big parties would need 326 seats. As things stand, the signs are that neither the Conservatives or Labour have enough to govern alone, meaning a deal with one or more smaller parties.

Now take a look at the average of polls from several polling companies – and see how it has changed over time.

This is what happened in 2010:
