Well, Vespa was a year before Lambretta who, I believe, are owned by India.
I drove a scooter for about 15 years but I found that Vespa and Lambretta were too expensive (for my pocket) so I opted for a Honda Lead 80cc from memory. It was wonderful in traffic being able to travel between the two lane traffic whilst they were held up by the lights ensured that I was never late for work.

Yeah I did read about this and enjoyed a WTF moment. The mind boggles (no pun intended) but I have been treated for AF (Atrial Fibrilation or Heart Palpitations) for two or three years now and the technique used these days in diagnosing and treating this problem is far advanced from 50 years ago when I would probably be dead. My next step will be a 'pacemaker' but again, this is a done via a local anesthetic, a wire in your right chest going through to your heart and the pacemaker inserted through a 2-3 cm cut in your left chest. You are kept in overnight for observation and released the next day (all being well of course). As yet, there are no specific causes for AF but it can be instigated by any number of occurrences. Last Wednesday I had a re-occurrence and had to spend a night in hospital where they determined that I had lost too much fluid on my 1 and a half hour daily walk and not topped up with enough liquid when i got back home. They pumped 2 bags of magnesium and 2 bags of potassium into me, upped my medication to 2 pills per day for 3 days and by Saturday I was back to normal.
They can do some marvelous things with the heart these days.

Most genius' are nutters. Stephen Hawking, Einstein, myself... There's a reason for it supposedly.

I've always wondered why head transplants haven't been attempted. We could become immortal.

The original Lambretta and Vespa scooters were both basically just copies of the Cushman scooter used by the US military in the second world war and their launches were only months apart. Lambretta went bust in the 70's and all the equipment and trade mark rights were bought by the Indian manufacturing division, but they wouldn't spend any money on protecting those rights and they effectively lost them about ten years ago, they're now owned by Lambretta SRL in Milan.

Yes, it's an interesting story. I seem to remember a docco where the designer worked for Lambretta but didn't get on with the 'head honcho' so took his design somewhere else and the Vespa was born. Lambretta came out the year after.
I noticed on one of those 'Scooter restaurant' sites (I think it was in India or somewhere in Asia) that they do a home delivery service using Vespa's and some of these are stacked with incredible numbers of orders but manage to deliver.
