Don't tar these young Eastern Europeans though, it is these companies that act in a disgusting and completely unethical manner which are to blame. Any company found paying below the minimum wage should be fined a huge amount, and if caught a second time should be wound up. Zero tolerance.
This is something I say regularly. We pillaged and screwed them over and used/took their resources, then certain people get up in an arms to an outrageous level about them using our public services or so on. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but I can't help but think we're being a bit hypocritical, considering Britain's history. That's not to say there aren't issues with the situation and potential situations moving forward.
Not tarring the young Eastern Europeans themselves, PL. Can't blame any individual trying to improve their lot.
Haha, how about kicking out those who don't have the excuse of language barriers, cultural differences, and terrible conditions in their home countries?!
Not sure about that, PL. Most opponents of unrestricted immigration are just that; opponents of unrestricted immigration, not opponents of young Poles. I'm sure any group of people will include a few nutters - look at the son of that Rochdale Labour councillor who got caught going to Syria.(I bet he votes Labour)
I don't mind people coming here to better their lives. It's the people that come here just because they can get benefits. But then it's the governments fault for being far to lax. If you aren't medically ill or a single parent(within reason), foreign or born here you should work for your pay. I still think people on the doll should be sent out to charities and other places ( the job centre paying the wages) to earn their money. Cut down some of the **** paper work job seekers have to do and get them working. Atm all they have to do is work at a Charity shop for 4 months and that's it.
I do agree with you. What Britain did in the past was, more often than not, acceptable in the eras in which those deeds occurred. Britain saw itself as bringing civilisation and order to other countries. In return they hoovered up all the riches and resources. We could have been the Spanish and not appeared to have brought civilisation and order while hoovering up all the riches and resources, I suppose. That's not a defence in the slightest. The fact is, is that it is done, and shouldn't be done again. I'm not sure that a country exists that hasn't preyed on a weaker one at some point or another. The point you make above though DTLW is why you'll never hear or read words from me about those people coming over here. There are many and varied reasons why people come to Britain. Mostly positive. A very small fraction do so just to take advantage. However, they get all the headlines. It's a similar mindset when developing countries want to use their remaining resources. The developed world says... What..? You can't do that..? You'll de-forest or pollute the planet. While we pollute away to our hearts content, having taken out most of our original forests, around 200 years ago. Hypocritical. Anyone hear/read about the oil strike around Gatwick..? Billions of barrels apparently..!
It's precisely what you think it's referring to Pomps. Again...meh....it's songs for musicals (which is kinda why I'm figuring you like it...)
It's because they are a easy target. Instead of actually having a go at the government for allowing it in the first place. Immigrants even get blamed for the mess the NHS is in, yet that isn't down to them either. A bit off topic, but I watched a programme on the NHS the other day. They listed the cases that cost the most: Smokers: £2.5 billion a year. Alcoholics: £2 billion a year. Obesity: £25 billion a year. They basically said obesity will bankrupt the NHS within 30yrs.
Especially as smokers and drinkers contribute a hell of a lot of tax money, in duty and VAT, towards the NHS. I can pig out on VAT-free food until I burst!
It kind of pissed me off. There was this girl who was about 20 that weighed about 30 stone. Her mum and her blamed the NHS because they didn't stop her eating junk food, saying how they basically made her fat. She went on to talk about how she couldn't walk 5yds, yet went on a holiday to spain on her benefits. The funny thing was that the docs wouldn't sign her off sick so she couldn't claim ESA. So she bitched and moaned about people not taking her illness seriously.
Obese people probably contribute less to society...smokers can work unless they become unfit, whereas the obese are unfit by definition. I would never hire an obese person for any job as I have experience of working with a couple. Couldn't even use the stairs...had to use a service lift!! Had longer for tea breaks as it took them longer to get to the canteen....illogical, they shouldn't have been allowed near the canteen. Sorry, you pressed one of my buttons.
I don't judge all the obese people as lazy. Some generally have a illness (earing disorders, stress etc), it's just a shame some see it as a easy way not to work.
All I know is that when I was young, most schools had one fat person...not the several per class as now. We had plenty of food and generally ate steamed puddings, so they must be eating massive amounts now as I don't believe there are a lot more sick people now.
We exercised more, ate more fat and less sugar. Having said that, the definition of "obese" nowadays seems to include what I would term "overweight" It has been often stated that the England Rugby team which won the 2003 World Cup would have classed 13 of the 15 as "obese" if we used the ridiculous BMI system.
